Tell me why do they suck ? I own a 6950 on my desktop PC, and i have not run in game problems. If you are talking about general experience, AMD is no worse than nVidia. But hey, it is better to bash them, instead of looking at your own camp. I can't even update my nVidia drivers on my laptop but whatever.

If you had to rename "csgo_linux" to "hl2_linux", you'd get a massive jump in framerates. AMD's profiles for games in CCC still need a lot of work when it comes to Linux support. This problem was highlighted by Phoronix, but AMD hasn't yet done anything about it.

When it comes to cards based on Tonga, Hawaii, and Fiji, AMD has a massive resource utilisation problem for these cards that they seemingly can't find a workaround for. Even with Vulcan coming into the mix next year, I don't think they'll be able to get things together properly without having a larger driver team for Catalyst on Linux.

Yea, i don't have (yet) a GCN card, but soon i i will be able to say if there is big difference on software level in Linux between those two.

When did I get a camp and when did I bash AMD?

Saying that AMD + Linux = sucks is kinda bashing, when nVidia + Linux = sucks as well. Just go to any Linux forum and check for issues with installing drivers for either manufacturer.

Just don't game on Linux, that's my guess, I guess.
I know I will get a lot of hate for this but, why on earth should AMD or Nvidia push a lot of money into Linux drivers R&D at just 1% marketshare? It's just not logical at this point. If it works right now it's good enough for them, no reason to push some extra FPS gaming drivers since half of that 1% don't even game on it.

If SteamOS (or any other *nix) actually gains more ground against Windows I'm quite sure AMD (and Nvidia) will catch up and take their time to "perfect" their drivers.

Dude I live in Linux forums, this place and MR are my only non-linux forums, and here I hang out mostly in OT and the Linux section.

Saying AMD+Linux=sucks isn't bashing AMD anymore than it's bashing Linux, Realtek+Linux=sucks, Killer+Linux=sucks, Cannon printers+Linux=Suck I still use all of those things to.

They both suck but AMD sucks worse. Currently there is a problem with GRUB 2 and nvidia drivers, which makes it suck particularly bad. It is pretty easy to fix though. If you fix AMDs driver, you still get bad performance.

I've never used an AMD card on Linux, only an iGPU with a 290X passed through to a Windows VM (QEMU) but I remember reading the AMD driver page:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst
Quote:
Catalyst does not support Linux kernel in version 4.2 and above. Officially, Catayst 15.9 supports Linux kernels up to 3.19. We are using community patches to provide support for up to 4.1 Linux kernel.
Quote:
Catalyst packages are no longer offered in the official repositories. In the past, Catalyst has been dropped from official Arch support because of dissatisfaction with the quality and speed of development. After a brief return they were dropped again in April 2013 and they have not returned since.

It's at least better than the open source driver:
Quote:
Compared with the open source driver, Catalyst performs better in both 2D and 3D rendering, also having better power management, but it lacks efficient multi-head support.

Judging by these charts (I'm not a Linux supporter so I don't visit Linux forums) I would say that the amount of suckiness is not equal between Nvidia and AMD. When a R9 290 is barely keeping pace with a GTX 950, something is sucking quite hard.

I agree with this %100. I prefer not to have development time wasted on Linux. Let the Linux gurus figure it out.... that's why they like the OS so much anyways isn't it?

Nvidia's linux drivers are already on par with their Windows drivers. Why shouldn't AMD's?

I like Elementary, a linux distro, because it is easier and more pleasant to use than Mac OSX or Windows. You like windows because its plays games. There is a way we both can get what we want.
