[Phoronix]4K AMD/NVIDIA High-End GPU Comparison On SteamOS Linux - Page 5

It isn't an either or scenario. If AMD spends more money on drivers they can maintain both. Ofc there is no free free lunch, the money comes from some place. Put four developers on it full time and it would cost AMD about half a million dollars a year. Pretty inexpensive to hedge your bets.

AMD will actually open-source their OpenCL and Vulkan driver which is a bit surprising.

I hope so because their current drivers are awful.

This doesn't mean nVidia's drivers are great, they're only slightly less awful than AMD's.

Please don't misunderstand what I am saying either, Nvidia would have some angry customers if they shifted focus to Linux as well.

Let's not forget that AMD also has to worry about splitting their very limited resources two more ways ... one for the PS4 and it's OS and one for the XBox One and it's OS.

I've been saying this for years ... AMD doesn't have enough money and resources to fight a two front war with Intel and nVidia. Heck, Intel spends more money on R&D than AMD MAKES!

Now if AMD wants to seriously delve into Linux, they will be splitting resources between Windows, 2 consoles, and Linux.

nVidia has done a lot more work in the past, and is doing a lot now with Linux because of their super computer and Tesla work ... not to mention they have a lot more money ... so nVidia has a stronger advantage.

I wouldnt say they are fighting as much as just trying to stay in the game.

If you had to rename "csgo_linux" to "hl2_linux", you'd get a massive jump in framerates. AMD's profiles for games in CCC still need a lot of work when it comes to Linux support. This problem was highlighted by Phoronix, but AMD hasn't yet done anything about it.

When it comes to cards based on Tonga, Hawaii, and Fiji, AMD has a massive resource utilisation problem for these cards that they seemingly can't find a workaround for. Even with Vulcan coming into the mix next year, I don't think they'll be able to get things together properly without having a larger driver team for Catalyst on Linux.

Yea, i don't have (yet) a GCN card, but soon i i will be able to say if there is big difference on software level in Linux between those two.

AMD,with the release of their new embedded R line,is moving linux drivers to open source. thumb.gif
