I got AMD drivers to work on accident.
Try adding this to your GRUB file
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"
GRUB_GFXMODE=<native monitor res>
Where /native monitor res> is a resolution, aka 1920x1080.
There is a problem with Nvidia drivers where fancy GRUB splash screens won't display on boot and cause X not to load correctly. I suspect the problem exists for AMD too but I can't be sure.
Your grub file can be found in /etc/default/grub in Ubuntu or similar OS.
