[Verge] YouTube will pay video creators during YouTube Red's free trial

UPDATE! (Click to show)
I have no idea how to actually format this, but I'll try.

If you want to support your content creators, don't sign up for the YouTube Red free trial. Just sayin' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

YouTube has confirmed to us that creators will not receive revenue when a #YouTubeRed user watches your videos during the free trial.

Apparently a lot of YouTubers/channels have been upset by this. They have expressed their opinions on this and it honestly shouldn't be like this. But at the end of the day, by using Youtube you agree to their terms...
There also is the option not to use the free trial too.

The video platform has responded to these fears today, assuring video makers they'll still get paid even when YouTube Red users are riding for free.

So they have overturned this. Great move!

The WAN Show covered this I think quite well, although they didn't mention anything about creators not receiving revenue during the trial from a YTR subscriber view. Google really should cover the cost (like the Apple music drama where apple caved) during the trial period.

Link to he segment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cytwZTl2R9I&feature=youtu.be&t=20m36s

After the trial has ended the revenue for a view from a YTR subsciber will be fractionally higher than an ad supported view. I am quite excited for YTR when it comes to the UK (in the next 5-10 years /s) as it adds to the Google Play Music All Access subscription and also adds background playback for YouTube on devices (Which still annoys me that this is not standard without having to use xposed).

It definitely sucks for people who depend on YT for their income. And I don't think it's un-wise or irresponsible to make YT your job either. But YouTube doing this doesn't surprise me in the slightest, they're always finding new ways to screw over their content makers that they depend on. Shouldn't be a free-trial at all. Glad I never got into doing YT full time...
Ehh its only for 1 month...while everyone wont sign up at the same time, its safe to say they will lose 1/2 a months income over the course of a year. At the same time, in theory, they should be able to generate more revenue by the end of the year. You have some people who refuse to watch ads, so they use some adblocker thing, but they wouldnt mind paying for a subscription to remove that. I see it kinda like Spotify and Netflix. Things like that IMO lower piracy and in return actually net the content producer more money. So yes.. .sucks for them for the next month, but I'm sure they will be glad in the end.

As for Apple, their trial was 3 months, but at the same time, those content providers might have their content on Spotify, Youtube, Google Play, Pandora, .... and so on. Most Youtube content people dont have many other avenues... so maybe Apples 3 months is the same as 1 month for google.

One thing that came to mind is that people can create fake accounts and take advantage of the free trial... but if you think about it... those people probably run an ad-blocker already and would be using it for the other services.

Do you want to not get paid for a month of work? I mean, its just one month. Doesn't matter if its staggered or not losing 1 month of revenue is 1 month of revenue.

If I was going to lose 1/2 a months worth spread over the course of a few months , and get a raise, then yes i would without thinking twice.

Edit: kinda like what i am doing right now at work. I am working 60-80 hour weeks for the past month. Im salary, im doing 2x the hours and getting payed the same, but when this project is over, I will be getting a big raise if the project is a success. Sounds very simular to me.

There's patreon and other third party subscribe services you can use. I wonder how popular this will be, now that all these alternatives to directly support creators are readily available.

The 1 month of lost ad revenue and no pay for the given user isn't the end of the world, but this service is launching into quite the competitive marketplace and should better provide a value to the users beyond what a third party subscriber option could provide. Or creators would predominantly stick to patreon/etc

at least subscribing to twitch.tv channels gives site wide emoticons, making a point for how creators could benefit from offering the option to subscribe through twitch, even if twitch take ~50% of the fee for most streamers. (some older/bigger streamers apparently still make 75% of the fee though)

Except it isn't a big raise, its a marginal uptick in revenue for the creators by all accounts.

Not to be nit-picky but your analogy is poor as well. Your sacrificing your work even with your "big raise" or bonus or whatever you get is not likely to net you a 1-1 for the value of the effort you put in above the requisite 40hrs. Not to mention how very "start-uppy" that sentence feels. Not one to rain on any parades but the likelihood of the startup striking gold is like 5,000-1 and for the most part you just gift away the extra time per week for no gain. Your call though, it's your life.

Maybe this isn't pertinent to you or accurate to your situation, in which case disregard.

No, i work for a billion dollar company.. .so no startup ZOMG kinda stuff. But so far we sold this system to one client for a lot of money and have 5 other companies interested in it as well. This is the first project at my company that I got to design and lead a small team to make. I was only given half the resources i was originally quoted. So, I had to work hard to make this happen. That raise is not guaranteed as well. I want a 30% raise, but i could end up with a 10%, 5% or even none. Yeah, kinda different situation but I am only getting payed for half the hours I worked. That Hope for money is not guaranteed, and most of that is me being under-payed already for the role i ended up taking on in the division. So, without the project I still would have gotten a raise. I will probably get more if this project works out, but i could lose the raise completely if i mess this up. So I am sacrificing in hopes to make more money. Sadly the youtubers dont get to control their own fate in how well this will work out for them in the end. But, since google is now going to cover the difference, the youtubers dont sacrifice anything and are going to receive more money. I am really interested in seeing how much additional revenue they will be receiving 5%, 10% , 15%?
