[Engadget] Rare lunar rover prototype accidentally sold for scrap - Page 4

Why is this such a big deal? It obviously was far from the actual design that went to the moon and I'm certain there are actual Rovers in NASA's possession on display at museums like the Smithsonian...

Double post, sorry...

It's important because it was the first, it's value is in it's existence

Perhaps but in the end it was basically a discarded design. Obviously NASA made radical changes to the original prototype to make it more suitable to the Apollo missions and the fact that nothing like this prototype ever flew in space makes its value less in my eyes than Rovers that actually did. At any rate, the comments in the story claim that the guy who bought it didn't dismantle it and intends to sell it at some point.

Damn, if that weighed 8,000 pounds I'm glad battery technology has evolved. This phone would weigh 2 pounds easily.

Actually I have the opposite reaction, since the final design was so different from this early prototype it makes the historical purpose of this device even more pronounced to show the great evolution of thought.

True, but its not like NASA doesn't still have all the specs and designs of the prototype to go show the evolution of the final design.
