Best 2.0 Speaker for PC for 120$~ with Asus STX SoundCard. No Subwoofer.

Hello,

1) Budget is around 80-120$.

2) Music tastes : Wide range, mostly alternative, Indie, rock.

3) Speakers will be used for gaming, music and movies.

4) I have an ASUS STX soundcard in my PC.

5) Using them at home in a rather small room. Maybe 4m x 5m

6) I can buy basically everywhere online. That should be no problem.

Additional Information :

- I can't use a subwoofer in this room. The desk is small with 2 monitors already on it. The ground is not suitable for a subwoofer.
- I don't have an external amplifier, only the STX.
- Spending more than 120$ might be no problem, but should definitely be under 160$
- When I listen to music/movies/gaming then I don't turn the volume all the way up.
- I am using it as speakers that sit directly infront of me left and right next to my monitor.

Here are a couple of speakers that I looked at :

- http://www.amazon.com/Edifier-Studio-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446047902&sr=8-1&keywords=edifier+studio
- http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-MS40-BEHRINGER/dp/B000IKSIOM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446047915&sr=8-1&keywords=behringer+ms40

I am a little bit confused as to what exactly does define the sound quality of speakers. A friend of mine was talking about Watts being important, but it is really important for my needs?

I am currently using these : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121020

Would be spending 100~$ on new speakers be a huge upgrade coming from those ?

Thank you all very much in advance!

No speaker will do all that well. And at your price range, none will.
You can do better than what you have, but you aren't going to get an Oh Wow! Does that sound way better.
Better, yes, Oh Wow, not so much.

Many people like the Klipsch ProMedia speakers.

Watts have absolutely nothing to do with how a speaker sounds. All it is is the manufacturer's guess as to how much power it will take to drive the speaker to a reasonable volume lever in an average room.
It can be useful if you're matching an amplifier to a speaker. You want the amplifier to not have to be at maximum power when you are listening to the speaker at the loudest level you will use because most amplifiers perform best somewhere well below their maximum power output.

Thank you for the answer. I have seen the Klipsch in some forums aswell. They look to be quite a popular choice.

I don't expect it to be "Oh Wow", but they should still be a nice upgrade from the crappy ones I am coming from shouldn't they?

The ProMedias are at, or very near, the top in "computer" speakers.
Oh yes! You will notice quite a difference.

The next step up would be am amplifier and "Home Audio" bookshelf speakers and a "home audio" sub.
With home audio speakers, either powered (so you don't need an amp) or un-powered, there is better sound and many more choices available, but, alas, prices are higher.

If you could put off your purchase until you have $300 - $500 to spend you could do some amazing things.

But the ProMedias are with Subwoofer. What are the best ones without a subwoofer? I can't use one frown.gif

Sorry to bump this again. Any chance someone knows if the Samson MediaOne BT4 are good? They are within a reasonable price range for me and a lot of people do praise them.

Thank you smile.gif

One word.

Used

For 120.00 all you can get is Meh. New. I mean, sure, some of the stuff sounds ok but none of it is close to good.

https://app.audiogon.com/listings/monitors-definitive-technology-mythos-gem-satellite-speakers-pair-black-2015-10-26-speakers-48183-woodhaven-mi

These will sound much better than meh. Still Meh but, you want nearfield monitors with a magnetic shield.

You never mentioned amplification. You will need an amp to drive these, they do not include one.

That's an interesting find. The construction is at least correct. Speaker drivers in most speakers are really cheap. It would not be hard to produce a great speaker for 150.00. Perhaps they managed to do it. The connectors on it are kind of drecky but otherwise they look ok. I just bought a used pair of Totem mites for 150.00. They sell for 700 new. The drivers in them are probably worth about 30.00. The rest is for the name brand, design competency, and nicely finished cabinets.
