MySQL and website.

Thread Starter
My homework at university is to create a database using MySQL. Lecturer said to use MySQL Workbench and create a database. I don't know nothing about MySQL yet. Just started to learn. But I created a website on PHP. Still learning PHP too. So, I don't know what should I do with this homework. Is it possible to create a database in MySQL Workbench and apply it to website? For example, database of website users.

When I had a similar project, we used a tool which interfaces python to mysql, and then had python serve HTML templates which got filled in by database data when a request was made. There are many ways to approach the problem.

You can have a mysql database without a website.

Download work bench, install it using the graphical install, and then graphically create a data base using mysql work bench. It is not harder than using any other software. You don't have to write any code (although you can if you want). A database is only a place where you can put your tables. That is it.

There are lots of tutorials online.

Why can't you have a MySQL database without a website? You can still create a schema, tables, views, run other SQLs using MySQL Workbench. Or maybe that is what you are saying but typed 'can't' instead of 'can'. If not, please do enlighten - will not claim to be an expert in MySQL.

How confusing! You're right, ofc. Can't believe that escaped my proof reading. tongue.gif

Thank you for your replies. I'll do as you recommend, just create a database without a website. But you said that it is easy, my leacturer told that I have to ER diagram before, and use a language Python, C, Delphi or PHP. Which language is better to use? I study PHP and started to learn Delphi.

You don't need anything but sql to work with a data base. If you want to create an application that reads from a database you would need to select an appropriate language and then the appropriate drivers/api code for that language and that data base.

Which language you choose would depend on the application you are trying to create. If you only want to talk to the database at all, I think PHP is probably the easiest only because PHP is designed to work with a mysql back end (all though you don't have to).

For that purpose I would download a WAMP install (windows) or the appropriate package for linux.

An ER diagram is just a conceptual model of a database, you can create one with any graphing solution you please (visio, gliffy, whatever).
