Upgrading from XP or buy a new PC?

Thread Starter
Trying to help out a coworker that currently has an XP PC that's pretty old. I'm wondering if they should buy a cheap PC or just buy a Windows upgrade? I've been searching around and found some cheap $200-300 PCs but i'm kind at lost with finding a cheap legit version of Windows

What are his current system specs? Is it custom or manufacturer box?

Motherboard (custom)
CPU
Memory
HDD/SDD
PSU
Video Card

What will he use it for?

There are no cheap, legitimate copies of Windows..

Anyway, if they're using a PC with Xp on it, it's way to old.

Check Dell Financial for of lease computers.

It really depends on the hardware, was it a fairly beefy machine for it's time? If it's not a dual core system, with 1gb+ ram, and a DX9 videocard then it's probably not worth your effort.

I vote for buying a cheap premade PC. I'd tell him there was nothing that can be done for it.

If he's running a Phenom X4 with 8 gig of 1600 and a 7200 RPM HDD, there is no reason to upgrade if all he is doing is surfing the web. Lets please get all the facts straight before we start arbitrarily making suggestions.

It's a Dell. I'll ask but I highly doubt she knows any specs expect roughly when she bought it.

I just remember being able to buy Windows 8 with university accounts for $70-80 but that seems to be gone now.

In my current work, the used PC's are IBM ThinKCentre A51, NEC stations and such. They run either on P4 or Athlon x2 2000-to-4000+ with RAM varying between 512MB and 2GB DDR2. GPU's are Intel IGP, GF 6150, ATi X500-to-x1900. The best of those need 5 minutes to log in into the OS. Everything is just so DAMN SLOW. Oh, and don't forget HOT, because everything is SLIM or smaller (mATX).
OP, for whatever your friend is using his PC, a rig with old A4 or A6 AMD APU + 4GB 1333 DDR3 RAM can fit in the budget (+some HDD i presume). For OS... well, i am not a person who buys such stuff, but 2nd hand OS are a no-go usually. The Win 7 Home should be going really cheap i believe. Those are like 5+ year old.

I bought 3 copies of Windows 7 for 17$ each while studying at UT. Spoiled me on future windows prices but good.

Ok just talked to her and she'll find out the specs tonight.

I also found out the main reason why she wants to upgrade is because her iTunes can't update because XP isn't supported on the newest iTunes.
