Two of Japan's biggest electronics giants booked soaring profits Thursday in a sign that efforts to fix their tattered balance sheets were finally paying off.

Sony kicked off the upbeat news by reporting a six-month net profit of almost US$1 billion (RM4.3 billion), crediting its PlayStation video game unit and smartphone parts business for a big improvement in its finances.

Shortly after Sony's announcement, rival Panasonic also said that its fiscal first-half profit jumped, as the firm presses on with a corporate shakeup.

They cant. Plasma tech is dead because various government around the world outlawed it indirectly. You see, by so many places passing laws that have massively strict power draw requirements on TVs, you can only buy an LCD. Plasma requires voltage per cell to drive it and while some breakthroughs *could* probably be made to bring the power required per cell down, as resolution goes up then so do the number of cells by huge margins. To produce a 4K plasma panel would require massive power draw, in the hundreds of watts range. Unfortunately, TVs are only allowed to draw under 100 watts for many sizes and some size ranges must now be under 50 watts max in many countries and states. So plasma cannot be sold most places and thus no company wants to produce a panel. The future of plasma tech is OLED, which is basically the breakthrough of plasma in a new acronym.

Panasonic outsold Sony! Living in the sheltered US, I had no idea they were that big. I'm happy with their products I have, but they were only available online. Thought they were a dwindling brand from the past.

Agreed. Plasma was and is still amazing. Far better than any LCD in almost all regards but there's no need to bring it back. OLED is superior to plasma in every single way except for price. It's just too bad that the general population and even tech enthusiasts won't buy OLEDs for the same reason they didn't buy plasmas. We're gonna be stuck with LCDs for the next few decades.

I thought OLED was still slower than TN much less plasma, and I heard the blue fades. Hopefully they fixed both. It would be great if they could get the motion down. I know my 240hz pixel refresh, 120hz 4k isn't nearly as good as my old samsung 720p living room plasma at keeping up with motion.

Edit: TN 4k

This ^ basically when the price of OLED comes down people will buy it. But until then the price is way too high for most people. Costs around 3k for a 55inch 4k were as you can get a 55inch 4k LED for $500 or less.

I am actually waiting for a smaller OLED screens. Because I don't like the pixel density of 4k on a 55inch screen.
