If you have been buying Windows for a while you would know that this is how activation has always really worked. If you changed a major PC component (mainly the MB and HDD) more than once a year or 6 months (i forget which) your copy could end up failing to activate. Requiring you to phone MS or do some stupid online tech support thing to get it activated again.

Think of it as the next step, like where you have devices activated on your steam account. Except its for your OS.

I'd prefer that people stop whining about it and move to current technology unless they have a valid technical reason not to. Personal preference or laziness are not valid reasons to create this hellish security landscape we exist in today. If you're going to play on the Internet, you should be required to keep up to date. Let us also quit pretending that any of you are going to switch to another operating system family because of Windows 10.

Actually here on OCN quite a number of users stated that they went all-in or are at least dual-booting because of this W10 nonsense ...

people who use the term whining because people don’t agree with their viewpoint .. rolleyes.gif

valid reasons:

1. The operating system does not feel like your own anymore ( argue that it never was, doesn’t change the product perception ) its the difference between leasing a motor vehicle and just buying the car with some pre paid finance.

2. The operating system does indeed have front doors, back doors, side doors, roof hatches, cellar doors.. you information travels freely like an economic migrant.

3. There have been quite a few people with games that aren’t working properly on Win 10 vs Win 7. You can argue its the game Dev's fault, it probably is .. but that’s the same as saying my game works on windows 7 but not Linux argument ..

4. There have been quite a few driver issues with Windows 10, again see above.

5. The UI is really nice, the rest of the bloat and the app centric design of the desktop is not welcome. It may be the future, but a future decided by who ? The user or the market projectionists? OCN is a desktop PC enthusiast site not a "transitioning to tablet experience" site. Again, see above yes things are changing in that direction I admit, the PC in its current state is going dodo, but they arent doing anything to create a niche or slow it down, they are encouraging it.

6. Data mining, see 1,2 & 6

There are more..

The security argument is ludicrous. For one Microsoft Windows operating systems are like Swiss cheese and always have been, Its part of the problem of having to support everything from everyone and being a massive mega conglomerate . We are all big enough and smart enough now to realise even Andriod / iOS and Linux are not security safe zone.. its impossible to keep a computer system safe all of the time for all of the people. That doesn’t however preclude the option to a least run something that doesn’t ACTIVELY force this open door policy on its end user.

Now I have to go around and disable updates on EVERY relative's PC.

Uhmm..

So what are the safe Windows 7 Update KBs again? If I recall correctly, there's a thread about it here.

I rarely turn on Windows Update, but this time around I need it for some reason, but I don't want to switch to Win 10.

Here's a batch script to uninstall them.

I tried Windows 10 for about a week. That's how long Windows 10 lasted for me.

I reformatted and installed Linux, and I absolutely love it.
This is my first time with Linux, and I see few reasons to switch back.
Everything worked out well with my first distro. Linux mint is great.

The learning curve is not steep. If anything it's stepping out of the "familiar zone" and acquainting oneself with a new OS (much like I would have to do with Windows 10).

In my opinion, the opposite is true.
I care about gaming, and the more people on Linux the better.
Although I let others make their own choices, as I have made mine.
(And I don't try to actively influence their decisions for my benefit)

On topic,
The option to choose (or not choose) is important, including what gets stored on your computer.
I dislike the direction Windows is going, in many ways.
I am thankful they have have pushed me away.

I still have 2 laptops running Win 7 and I do not know what pop ups you guys speak of, the only thing i see is a win 10 logo on my process icons bar. Also for a gaming machine Win 10 is amazing I got 5-10 extra fps per game switching and with the new drivers @ 2k and the xbox app has a built in screen capture that works with every game I own. I dont see why ocn hates Win 10 so much.
