[Ars/TV] Windows 10 will be automatically downloaded to Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines next year - Page 6

I am pretty much done with our conversation since you dismiss every single reason I provide without actually replying to it.
Whatever floats your boat, we have no choice but to agree to disagree.

valid reasons:

1. The operating system does not feel like your own anymore ( argue that it never was, doesn’t change the product perception ) its the difference between leasing a motor vehicle and just buying the car with some pre paid finance.

2. The operating system does indeed have front doors, back doors, side doors, roof hatches, cellar doors.. you information travels freely like an economic migrant.

3. There have been quite a few people with games that aren’t working properly on Win 10 vs Win 7. You can argue its the game Dev's fault, it probably is .. but that’s the same as saying my game works on windows 7 but not Linux argument ..

4. There have been quite a few driver issues with Windows 10, again see above.

5. The UI is really nice, the rest of the bloat and the app centric design of the desktop is not welcome. It may be the future, but a future decided by who ? The user or the market projectionists? OCN is a desktop PC enthusiast site not a "transitioning to tablet experience" site. Again, see above yes things are changing in that direction I admit, the PC in its current state is going dodo, but they arent doing anything to create a niche or slow it down, they are encouraging it.

6. Data mining, see 1,2 & 6

There are more..

The security argument is ludicrous. For one Microsoft Windows operating systems are like Swiss cheese and always have been, Its part of the problem of having to support everything from everyone and being a massive mega conglomerate . We are all big enough and smart enough now to realise even Andriod / iOS and Linux are not security safe zone.. its impossible to keep a computer system safe all of the time for all of the people. That doesn’t however preclude the option to a least run something that doesn’t ACTIVELY force this open door policy on its end user.

We define valid differently. Those reasons don't really fly for me. Your security counter-argument is nonsense. The inability of human minds to create a perfect system isn't justification to use older, even less perfect systems.

Praise be to Gaben -- he knew it all along. SteamOS didn't spawn spontaneously, but rather from a cause.

Can't wait to see how much SteamOS spies on its users.

I'm on Windows 10 myself but I agree that it shouldn't be forced upon every living creature running 8.1 and 7.

What MS is doing right now is more likely annoying and turning potential users away rather than toward W10, and sadly enough, those that are not tech savvy will just upgrade to save them the annoyance, and for those that are tech savvy, MS will continue making it harder and harder for them to remove these annoyances to the point where installing Windows 10 is less of a hassle.

Let us also quit pretending that any of you are going to switch to another operating system family because of Windows 10.

Actually here on OCN quite a number of users stated that they went all-in or are at least dual-booting because of this W10 nonsense ...

If by quite a few you mean the same 5 or so that go in every thread that mentions Windows 10 and start preaching the evils of Microsoft and the imminent telemetry apocalypse, then yes I agree.

I think its hilarious that people think Microsoft is desperate to push Windows 10, like these privacy issues are actually affecting adoption. A fraction of a percent of the Windows userbase might be aware of these issues, and a fraction of that are the people who view it as a huge problem.

The truth is that Windows 10 will be adopted by most people, and anyone who doesn't update will be left behind. That fraction of a fraction of a percent who refuse to update or decide to switch to Linux will not change that.

Windows... windows... nope doesn't ring a bell.
Oh you mean the one that plays games and burns in my new hardware? that one? People still have those outside of those uses?

Jokes aside.

Few simple steps to enjoy your windows machine and be productive.

1. Acquire a real computer and put any other OS on it. It can be an old duo core laptop, it will fly just fine. This machine will be used to do business [pay bills, store info, talk to people, even buy games on steam! etc.etc.etc.]

2. Acquire a managed switch. Its cheap these days! You just need it to be able to make its own VLANs. It doesn't really need other functions. an old Verizon/Comcast/somethirdthing router would do as it often lets you do this.

3. Acquire 3 NICs[10$ 1mb full duplex rosewell or others will do. supported by the os we are going to use], a junk pc and a copy of pfSence [its free!], configure your new rock hard firewall thru a neat little gui, or go nuts with pf.conf if you are a professional.

4. Make 2 VLANs. One for the windows machine(s), one for the rest of your house.

5. Turn off all updates on your windows machine. Enjoy your safe, reliable life with secure finances and all possible pleasures and comforts of high end PC safely never having access to any sensitive information!

Hope this helps. ^^

p.s. all jokes aside, if you hate this idea and refuse to change with the times, I do feel for you. It can seem pretty daunting to learn basic Linux/OS X/BSD ropes. But its truly pretty simple, even the firewall part. No wheels to invent here, there are guides and helpful communities. I would hope someone would try this set up. It does work and at most will cost you around extra 200 bucks. Which is definitely money, but it will help to let you both enjoy windows without worrying for your safety and will show you cool new things in other communities ^^

p.s.2. yes I know you can punch thru vlans. No its not relevant. If someone is attacking you while having skills to do that, you are already boned. = \
