ASUS Z170-P D3 or Asrock Z170 Gaming K4/D3

I am trying to decide between these two motherboards. ASUS Z170-P D3 or Asrock Z170 Gaming K4/D3. Does anyone see any favorable advantage for reliability/overclocking between these two?

I would be running a 6600k with prolimatech megahalems rev c and a single gtx 970 but may sli in the future. I will be overclocking as high as temperatures allow on air

Me too, any ideas? Both seem like great boards in order to keep your old ddr3!

Supposedly the asus is a 7 phase and the asrock is a 10 phase. Still someone in the newegg comments said they got their skylate to 4.7 on the asus.

I still think the Asrock is better. Either one should be fine for mild overclocking, 4.6 is usually where they start needing more voltage. I ended up buying some DDR4-3200 ram and the Asus MAXIMUS VIII HERO because I might want to push mine high in the future with water cooling.

I ordered the Asrock Z170 and a 6600k. I hope it's not too frustrating because in my experience Asus is one the best, but as far as DDR3 Z170 boards go, the Asrock seems to be higher end/better VRM etc.

I'm going to resuse my old DDR3 memory and my old water block works with a $7 bracket. I don't expect more than 4.6 out of it, but if I get more, so be it - we'll see in a few days.

Just want to add that I got my 6600k in the asrock fatal1ty gaming k4/d3. My old water block worked with a $7 adapter from Enzotech! The board fired right up and I updated the bios right away. Didn't even have to reinstall Windows 10.

My old Patriot Extreme DDR3 works perfectly and according to their support list is supported to 1.65v. It passed some basic stress testing with my old timings and clocks (7-8-8 @ 1500mhz 1T) which is fantastic, since those have been stable for me across a few different AMD processors.

Currently testing my CPU at 4.6Ghz with about 1.375 vcore. These chips sure run hot though! They spike up like crazy in prime95. I could've had 4.7 stable but the temps were too high. I wasn't expecting too much out of a budget board so 4.6 will do just fine.

i know this is an old thread, but seriously? i thought 1.65v DDR3 was a big NO with Skylake! or has that been proven false? i know all(yes, all three!) z170 DDR3 board manufacturers list basically all DDR3 ram as compatible, but even 1.5v is a stretch for Skylake. you're supposed to use 1.35v DDR3L or risk damaging the IMC.

i'm guessing that's where your heat is coming from, madmanmarz. so messed up how none of these boards have SLI or USB 3.1, and the Asus one doesn't even have the 5 basic audio jacks.

Nah, trust me I have undervolted and underclocked the ram and it makes no difference. The issue was a crappy stock Intel TIM job on die. Swapped it out for some metal paste and temps dropped 20-30c!

Still running the DDR3 @ 1.65v and I upped the vcore on the CPU to get 4.7 and temps don't even hit 65c now in the latest prime95 (smallfft/large,blend doesn't matter) They were hitting 90-100c at this overclock previously.

Yes although Intel says that the spec for Skylake is DDR3L at 1.35v, I guess ASUS, ASrock and a few others have decided that it should work fine. I'm sure there's some sort of decreased lifespan, probably, but who knows.

And even if these boards supported SLI they are budget boards and as a result the 2nd PCI-E is at 4x. Not surprising, this has been going on for years in this price range. Also it DOES have a USB 3.0 type C port.
