There are two thoughts of driver/BIOS updating:

1.) There's no reason to update anything unless you are having a problem.

2.) Always update everything to the newest / latest drivers available.

So, Which do you want to do?

You nailed the topic exactly.

I feel that if the machine is relied upon for work, where a down machine is money lost, I would not update as often. Stability is key and if it works, make as little change as possible. Take care of security updates, but leave everything else alone or until the new updates are well seasoned and vetted. This would include upgrading the operating system.

If the machine is just for fun, then do as billbartuska said and make a choice.

I don't know for stability. I always go with the newest. I would bet Intel would have the newer drivers if I was guessing. But, for stability, it seems like Asus would be the better bet as they made the board. I'm just guessing here.
