Need advice on lane usage!

Thread Starter
Have a question regarding PCI-E Lanes and M.2 drives.

Girlfriend is running a 6700K with 2x 980Ti's... will there be any issue if she throws in 2x Samsung 950 Pro's?

What kind of lane config will it be running and will there be any real loss?

I don't think that you can run them in x8/x8 with even one ssd connected via pci-e lanes to the CPU; maybe to the PCH though!

on Z170 most are hooked up to the PCH not the CPU b/c the PCH has 4x PCI-E 3.0 lanes so there is no need to use the CPU (I don't know any board that does other than plugging in a M.2 drive into an adapter that goes into a PCI-E slot that is connected to the CPU.

I would say if the motherboard has two M.2 slots then yes, and you can RAID them.

Will this work? What lanes will the 2 980tis be running?

They run off the cpu but the Z170X Gaming G1 has a plx chip. If you look in the manual you'll see the 4 PCIE slots are arranged...

x16_1
x8_1

x16_2
x8_2

So if you have one vid card in x16_1 and the other in x16_2 they both run x16 (because of the plx chip)

The two M.2 drives share resources with certain Sata/Sata Express ports... which is another part of the manual to try and decipher what ports you can use (if you need them) with M.2 drives installed.

The Gaming G1 doesn't have any PCIE slots connected to the PCH like most boards. So the only effect you'll have from using either x8 slot is it will also drop the relative X16 slot down to x8.

(*edit* I assume from the name you were talking about the close to $500 Gaming G1. If you are talking about one of the other variations then what I wrote here won't apply.)

With that board you will have both GPUs running at 16x/16x and yes you can still use both M.2 slots (like he said above you need to look at the manual to see what will be disabled and what slots to put your GPUs in.
