Looking for a cooler

Thread Starter
So, it's been a while since I tried overclocking and I haven't been keeping up with air coolers recently. Now that my rig is aging a bit, I'm looking to OC it to get a little more oomph. Currently I have the Xigmatek Gaia, and I can OC to 4Ghz with 1.2v, max temps are around 68*C with Prime95. I'm looking to get a cooler, trying to keep it under $50 and I'd like to try to push to 4.4-4.5Ghz. I want to avoid 140mm coolers since the max height for my case is 165mm and most seem to push that, more with the big fans. I would also like to avoid dual tower coolers, mainly because they are too cumbersome to deal with and space would be a little too tight. So far I'm looking at:

Thermalright Venomous X-RT- I used this with my Nahalem rig, and was able to push from 2.8 to 4.4Ghz. It was a beast of a cooler, but I'm not sure how it stacks up against the newer stuff.

Cryorig H5 Ultimate- newer cooler, not sure how it performs against the Venomous X. RAM clearance shouldn't be an issue (standard height DIMMS, only 2 slots used).

Thermalright TRUE Spirit 120M- Nice little cooler, might be worth it if the cooling can keep pace with the bigger sinks. Price is nice too.

I also looked at the Megahalems, but it's a little higher than what I want to pay ($59 on Amazon shipped). I know this cooler was top dog for a while.

Noctua's coolers look nice, but are out of my price range.

Never heard of jet.com. I'd rather stick to reputable retailers. Thanks though.

TRUE Spirit 140 Rev.A is under $50 delivered on Amazon. Great cooler for the money. There's a thread here about it.

I looked at the 140, but I worry that it may be too tall. It's 165mm tall without the fan and Silverstone says max height can be 165mm. I'll have to research to see if anyone else has managed to make it work.

My money is on it will fit just fine. Worst case is top of a pipe or two touch the side cover and if there is any vibration it might rattle a little. A piece of tape or a stick on cabinet door bumper will solve that. thumb.gif

performance wise i think you should read up on reviews of the scythe ninja4

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Scythe/Ninja4/

you will have some memory clearance issues, but aside from that it should work well for your purpose.

I did a review of the Ninja 4 on Overclockers. Nice heatsink. Purty, too.
