The farther you sit, the less pixels you see, but also less aliasing you see. The recommended viewing distance for my 55" 4k is 3.5 feet minimum to 6 feet maximum. I sit 3.5 feet and barely notice the aliasing, and it has extreme detail. At 6+ feet, the detail is lost but the minor aliasing disappears, even with 20/20 vision. A 55" 4k screen can produce text that is only legible even closer than 3ft and even with 20/20 vision, so the closer you are, the better.

You need to look up 'vernier acuity'. If you can 'barely see' aliasing in a 55" 4k display at 3.5 feet then that's great, but people with good vision have a much higher threshold. I hope you're aware that 20/20 vision is not the best vision, and plenty of people have better. You also don't seem to be aware that text can be scaled. One of the things I like most about my high DPI displays is the 'printed' look of properly scaled text. If you're scaling it 100% and sitting closer to read it, then you're missing out. Looks like we're not really on the same page after all.

I'll do what I did with Fallout 3: buy it retail price a month after it launches then finally play it 4 years later.

Lets show a little depth and logical thought process please.

Seriously dude stop been rational and get on board the hate train that's where all the cool kids with l33t graphix hangout with crysis 1 and criticise a game that they haven't actually seen or played yet

But the reality now is that we're a long way off being able to overcome AA with pixel density alone. Sure, AA taxes the crap out of your PC, but you know what else taxes the crap out of it? Rendering at 8-16k on the 24" monitor that doesn't yet exist, because that's the kind of density you're looking at if you want to make AA truly redundant. I appreciate the native antialiasing effect of my 24" 4k monitor, but I'm not going to pretend that it's anywhere near sufficient to eliminate the need for AA.

28" 4k here, looks great and I'm an AA snob - I always down sampled or ran 8x msaa when I was on 1080p. 28" 4k is taxing enough as is on the hardware, but 4k w/ no AA looks better than 1080p with 8x msaa any day of the week. That said, it's not perfect and on games that I do have the horsepower to do so, I run 4k+8x msaa or 4k + SSAA. Still good frame rates and the games look much crisper.

For example, Quake Live I run 8x SSAA forced in CCC on my 290x.. frames are still great and it's a really crisp image. Aliasing kills me, and so do the blurry AA's we seem to have these days

And I don't want to download a multiple gigabyte texture mod to fix textures that should be better in the first place. And there really is no excuse, if GTA can do it, so can Fallout. That's that for graphics.

Art style is about more than that though, and honestly from a technical perspective the engine is much improved. Give the modders a couple months and the game will look mint and be cheaper to boot if you really care that much, personally even if everything was exactly the same as FO3 with a new setting, story and some popular mods added I'd still get a lot of enjoyment out of it but I can already see it looks a lot better and has some features even the mods didn't ever really get right.

If you really need photorealistic graphics to be properly immersed, then feel free to wait a few more years before it really happens...As it is, FOs always had a bit of a gritty cartoon art-style even back in the 2D turn based days which explains why ultra-realistic textures and the like aren't as important as good lighting and shadows.

Who gives a *four letter word* about graphics? Gameplay is everything.
Spoiled brats who grew up on Crysis, back in my day Link and Celeste were made using sprites. Only had some 256 colors to display. None of this fancy, schmancy specular diffusion. It reminds me of when I was fighting Ultros. Sabin and Locke were nearly dead, but Terra still had diggity something restore potions left, (we had to use diggity because the Kaiser had stolen the word twenty, I chased him diggity three miles before getting it back finally, interestingly enough my neighbor down the street shared the same name with the Kaiser. Wilhelm used to come over each afternoon and we'd spend hours in front of the TV playing Eternal Champions. One day Wilhelm popped his head in through the screen door and says "can you give me a ride down to the old Johnson farm? I borrowed a spanner from they uncle Jeff and was wondering if I could tag along with you when delivering your weekly homemade grape jelly to them." Wilhelm was always forgettin what he borrowed from who, and damned if he didn't get himself into a pickle more often than not doing so. One time Old Willy, we started calling him that after the war turned his hair grey, Old Willy owed .75 cents to the towns bookkeeper. This man was angry something fierce about it too. Kept hootin and hollerin, goin on about how Old Willy was a thief. Willy eventually just up and emptied his pockets in front of him and says to him "Here's your dang .75 cents, with interest". We were all tickled pink by it that morning. So anyway Wilhelm poked his head through the hole in my screen door one day and asks if could give him a ride to the Johnson farm later on account he borowed a screw driver from their nephew Jorge and I was going there to iron out some details involving the new float for the 4th of July parade. Boy I tell you that float took the better part of May to construct, but that's another story . I looked ol' W square up and says to him "Sure, just let me get my kit for fence repair bundle and we'll head on over." I was going over to the Jameson's farm to do some fence work on account they ran over a section of it with their plough the last week and Ol' Will had borrowed some eggs from them earlier in the week to attempt to bake a cake for his sweetheart Ginny as it was her birthday that week.) Now where was I, that's right, you kids ought to just be happy with any 3D graphics you have, lest you wind up staring at a yellow dot that's meant to be a space ship shoot a blue line at a white amorphus blob that's supposed to be an alien....

After watching all of the gameplay videos I have some concerns. Maybe since I am only getting a snapshot of the game, my fears are unwarranted. But it seems to me like this game is missing some of the magic that made Fallout 3/NV so awesome. I can't put my finger on it, and I hope I am wrong, but the level of immersion seems lacking compared to the older game. Call me crazy, but part of it to me is the voice overs they did for all of the dialog. Again, I hope I am wrong and the game is as good as the previous titles.

I plan on reading a few reviews before jumping on this game, even though I am a HUGE fan of the series. There are a lot of people that think Bethesda can do no wrong, but this title is a tremendous amount of work and projects on this scale don't always get put together in the best manner. We will see. Can't wait either way!

Bethesda’s mentality for a while now has been console parity and the repeated use of Gamebryo does not help.

Say what you will, these two things are the major reasons why you will continue to see subpar visuals and continue to deal with game breaking issues.

Until they make a brand new gaming engine from scratch, buy or lease one don't expect miracles.

Making a brand new engine for what? How do people not understand this. You and I are the minority. Nobody who is a AAA title maker will make the game just for PC, because they make so much more money with consoles. We are a niche section of gamers, and we cannot expect devs to cater to our high end equipment. It is much easier and cheaper to just remake the engine and port it to PC. You can still do a good job don't get me wrong, but we keep expecting devs to suddenly change and cater to the minority, and its just simply not logical for them to do so.

EDIT - I'm not saying that FO4 looks like "crap" though it isn't nearly the best out there. I'm making a broader point about how some "gamers" are so holier than thou when it comes to people who enjoy the best graphics possible; as though we aren't real enthusiasts unless we don't care about graphics. That's BS. The biggest advantage PC gaming has over consoles is the fact that our rigs are generally many times more powerful than any console and that only matters when it comes to outputting better graphics. You can have a great story and game play on an Gameboy...

This is precisely why devs don't put that much effort into catering to the PC crowd, there are way too many variables. We saw this is Dragon Age Inqusition and the PC complaints were never really addressed. PC gaming is great and I will continue to pay more than the console folk on my hardware. But I am not going to expect that every title released is going to be head and shoulders over the console versions, it just isn't realistic.

Besides it has become somewhat of a cliche for PC users to dog the graphics and nitpick other small issues of games before they release. No wonder developers pay us little mind, half of us are going to complain anyways. If it isn't one thing then it's another, so it's almost a loose loose for them anyways. I won't complain or promote fear, I'll just wait and see what's what when it is released and then I'll decide if it's worth my time. I have found gaming at 1440p at high frame rate tends to make me care less about having all the graphics settings pumped up anyways. As long as the game runs smoothly and is enjoyable is all I ultimately care about...
