Z170 miniITX motherboard suggestions for overclocking?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

So, I built my PC (Hubble in my sig), and I ran into problems as soon as I started pushing my CPU. I wanted to benchmark it to have a baseline to compare to after overclocking but soon found out that as soon as the CPU was pushed for a few minutes, it would start throttling from 4GHz to 800MHz.

And, after much help from the guys over in the Overclock.net Skylake overclocking thread[1] , I think the problem is with the motherboard's VRMs. My theory is that the VRMs overheat much too easily, and the motherboard uses a feature called "BD PROCHOT" (Bi-Directional PROCessor HOT) to tell the CPU to throttle. Using ThrottleStop to disable BD PROCHOT (it prevents the signal from getting to the CPU), the throttling goes away... but the PC shuts down after a couple minutes of putting the CPU under load.

This is a major bummer for me since I spent 500$ on a CPU and over 100$ on a CPU cooler to be able to push it a little... and it's getting gimped by the motherboard even at stock settings.

Unfortunately, NewEgg only offers replacement for this item. And Gigabyte haven't responded to my support requests.
My current plan is to purchase a new motherboard and RMA the current motherboard (in that order, so my PC is not motherboard-less for a week). Then, sell the replacement BNIB on eBay.

And thus, my question:
Which miniITX, Z170 motherboard would you suggest?

I'm considering these options:

The ASUS Z170I PRO GAMING at 220$CAD. The red color accents are almost all on the heatsinks which I could remove and spray paint easily enough (there's a small red line on the PCB around the audio chips). And the USB3 header is on the edge of the board, not right in the middle like the Gigabyte board I currently have.

The MSI Z170I Gaming Pro AC at 255$CAD. This one has a lot of red accents on the PCB, which I dislike.

The EVGA Z170 Stinger is the most expensive option, at 280$CAD, and it doesn't have integrated wifi. It does have the black color scheme I'm looking for though.

I think I'm leaning towards the ASUS board, seeing as it's cheaper, more in-line with my color scheme than the MSI version, has built-in wifi, and is marketed with overclocking features and high-quality VRMs.

Is there any reason I should stay away from this ASUS board?

Have you considered the Asus Maximus VIII Impact?

I was going to same the same thing. I like it because the VRM is on a raised daughter board. This offers many more options for cooling while overclocking including a full cover block.

It's nice, but sheeesh, for 330$ it better be!

I'm not likely to ever install a full-cover water block.

Are the power components really that much better?

What benefits am I likely to see for 110$ extra? A higher stable overclock?

Where are you located? Every price I see is $230.

Having the VRM separate from the rest of the components helps disperse the heat around a larger area, allowing for more overclocking.

As for higher, more stable overclocks, that primarily depends on whether or not you win the CPU lottery. If you get a poorly binned chip, the best motherboard on the planet isn't going to help you.

So basically, the overclocking potential of the system will be limited by either the CPU (if it's a poorly binned chip), or the motherboard (if it has poor VRM).

Do you think the ASUS Pro Gaming motherboard would be sufficient for achieving an OC in the 4.4 to 4.6GHz range?
