How big?? FX-8320 + DUAL R9 290x overclocked on water

Thread Starter
I tried using the extreme power supply calculator but it seems it has changed over the years. It is telling me I need a 1200 watt power supply!!! That seems a bit ridiculous. I was hoping a 1000watt power supply would do!

I'm currently using an Ultra LSX-750 (well reviewed), with a single 58A 12 rail.

You can see my specs below but this is basically;
990fx, 8320@4750mhz 1.475v
currently have 1Xr9 290 unlocked to 290x and clocked at 1175/1675 (gonna go for two of these)
8GB ddr3
one ssd, one hd
one d5 water pump
like 2x 200mm fans
6x 120mm fans
2x 60mm fans
2 mini cold cathodes
one fan controller
one led for pump reservoir

Any suggestions?

If you weren't overclocking or using hacked bios it would be a lot easier.

Stock 8320 = 125
Stock 290x = 300
Stock 290x = 300
= 725

My guesstimates:
8320@4.7 = 220
OC 290x = 350
OC 290x = 350
= 920

I'd go with 1000w just to be safe. Make sure it has roughly 80amps or more on the 12v rails.

This is assuming a hacked 290 draws comparatively to a 290x, which I really don't think it does. It's not the same thing and there are fewer stream processors which probably = less power draw.

GOD DAMN OVERCLOCKING

nah it has the same amount of stream processors after the unlock. they are basically early 290x's that have shaders deactivated via bios. a small percentage are this way.

I just looked around a bit for overclocked 290x power draw and it's ******* crazy high. I think a really high quality 1000 watt would do but i might play it safe and aim for that 1200.

1200 watt isn't even crazy because these parts sure can draw alot when clocks and volts are turned up. you can easily get 240/350/350 watts on the cpu and gpus.

All PSU's are not created equal.

You can have a "1000w" PSU with 70 amps and a 1000w PSU with 110amps. Only one of those is really truly 1000w so make sure you go by amperage.

This review shows 860w usage in BF4 with similarly clocked 290x's. But with supersampling enabled (which I don't use, yet) it climbs to 1050 watts! And of course this is with a haswell i7, not a crazy power hungry FX.

I worrry!!

Well then you can grab a EVGA 1300 G2 or EVGA 1600 G2 and call it a day.

I guess I'll do one at a time. I'll wait on a good 1200 watt PSU deal, and then eventually get another 290 if I can get a deal.

I was hoping to do this around $300 but I guess it'll be closer to $400. I'm curious to see how older CPUs like mine do in multigpu setups in DX12. Time will tell.

Lol I just googled "extreme power supply calculator broken" and read your thread. I did find it odd that this new version gave me higher numbers than the last time I checked.

Thanks bro!
