[PClab] DDR3 vs DDR4 in CS,GTA5,TW3,Star Craft and AC:U (with min/avg fps) - Page 2

2400 cl9 must be pricey tho, they should've used 2400 cl10 cause they're more standard. Based on what this test shows I'd say at least DDR3 2400/DDR4 2800 for high end rigs, DDR3 2133/DDR4 2400 for mid-range platforms. Don't go DDR3 1600/DDR4 2133 if running dual channel in a gaming rig cause you'll lose a bit too much performance for my liking compared to what faster sticks will cost you. The difference between a CPU running DDR3 1600 vs DDR3 2400+ or DDR4 2133 vs DDR4 3000+ can be as big in CPU heavy scenarios as the difference between e.g. Fury and Fury X in GPU bound parts.

Sometimes even 4-5 fps can be a big difference, like 57fps vs 62fps. I'd pay the price of a 3000 kit to stay over 60 fps.

Benchmark is so dated. AMD flip flopped on top of NVidia again in performance just about a week ago. You'd have to have an overclocked 980 ti to be better than the Fury X.

benchmark was used to show the difference between two amd cards, a $550 one and $650 one.

btw
"Benchmark is so dated. AMD flip flopped on top of NVidia again in performance just about a week ago."

even if I decided to follow Fury X vs 980ti benchmarks closely since the Fury X launch to see if Fury X is really that competitive as it was supposed to be it seems I'd have already run low enough on patience by November to stop paying attention anymore. And AFAIK it's the aftermarket 980ti that's on the same price level as Fury X, not the reference.

Back to the thread please.

Yeah I agree. It's dated though. Drivers are a real game changer showing some real dramatic changes on the front of performance. I'm hoping AMD's drive to improve them drives NVidia to further theirs. Competition is good. The original post is off topic to begin with. We're comparing DDR3 and DDR4. I think once we get an APU compatible with DDR4 we can get some good comparative notes as Intel's GPUs are garbage in comparison. Not garbage in application. As it stands DDR3 to DDR4 does not warrant the expense to upgrade from when utilizing a dGPU.

this is as pertinent to the topic as the fact that the next comment you write will have the same count as the sp units on Fury non-x.

DDR4 has come down quite alot in price from since it was first introduced commercially around the release of the X99 stuff, from what I've seen it's alot more affordable than it was before, from what I've seen 2133MHz and 2400MHz DDR4 only cost a little more than DDR3 now

Sorry to go off topic but do you have a source of that? It would be cool to see.

My next comment is that we need to start moving away from DDR in general. It has become inefficient.

GDDR4 was generally not successful, and DDR4 seems better than DDR3 but this isn't revolutionary at all. It's barely better. Maybe the real change will come with DDR5, as was the case with GDDR5. It'd be a huge step up to see HBM(2) integrated onto Zen CPUs tho.
I'd like to see test which would prove how much RAM improves IPC on CPUs in gaming. They'd need to pick out a very CPU intensive game, then run an OC'd Haswell-E with dual channel 2133 vs quad channel 3000+. This would be interesting even if it proved nothing biggrin.gif

ddr wont scale much higher I doubt we'll even see drr5-6 etc the real change will be future tech like hmc imho, ot I would wait until kaby lake to judge ddr4 performance as it should (?) have a better memory controller only supporting ddr4.

DDR4 is just getting started. Just like you see DDR3-2400 we will see DDR4-4XXX+ latter on. DDR3 came out Core 2 and you had to have IVY+ to run DDR3-2400 without messing around in BIOS.
