5820k is only 20% faster despite it has 50% more cores. This indicates skylake have 30% better IPC in this test.

But not much games today can use 12threads..so in vast majority games skylake will be a lot faster.

Games on skylake are not any faster at all. Especially to use the word a lot. Unless you're looking at all the benches across the Internet where they're putting them against each other in stock form. These are k chips we're talking here. If you're not overclocking you're doing it wrong. Once overclocked things change quite a bit. All processors go into their respectful order. Based on price pretty much.

In other words. There's no clear winner between the two when it comes to gaming unless they're stock. Hence the massive indecision in this thread from me. I've done all the research and talking to people I could about both. Made a choice based on that.

haha I've seen all this crap already. There's even tests that show that the 4790k is faster than the 6700k in games and the 6600k is faster than them all. The 6700k is a great processor. I mean that's why I had a hard time picking one but at the end of the day its basically the same price as a hexa core. A Hexacore that's a much better overclocker 9/10 than the 6700k. Considering how far it has to come to play in the mid 4's. Basically any newer intel CPU that's OC'd in the mid 4's will not have any problems with games. There's plenty of well known sites showing what I had said earlier about them all falling into place by price.

i already tested sandy bridge vs skylake and there is 30-40% better IPC .And i already done some test vs haswell and skylake is 10-25% faster
http://www.overclock.net/t/1578480/i5-2500k-4-5ghz-vs-6700k-4-5ghz-in-games

Like war thunder 1.53 CPU benchmark
1920x1080 everything max AA OFF
4670k 4.2Ghz min 107 avg 125
6700K HT OFF 4.2Ghz min 131 avg 157.7Fps

Skylake is 25% faster than haswell there.

Maximum pc has the 6600k as their mid range and the 5820k as their "turbo". They just skipped right over the 6700k. Things aren't quite as cut and dry as they were a few years ago when quads were perfectly fine and the six core was total overkill. We could start seeing the six core on the mainstream pretty soon. Especially if this dx12 talk pans out the way some people think it will.

I'm also asking the same question.

In the UK the 5820k system works out about £100 more expensive.

At the moment I'm tempted to go with the 6600k and save £200 over the 5820k

I'm not interested in benchmarks any more so I'm really after something that will play games for the next few years without needing an upgrade.

Currently have a single 970gtx and may add another if required.

I can afford the 5820k but I'm not sure I will appreciate the difference, I used to change components all the time but I think this system will be sticking around for quite some time.

Shame that the x99 motherboards are so expensive.

If you want to save some money. Yeah the 6600k looks like the way to go. There's actually benches out there where it beats the 6700k and 5820k in gaming benches. I got the 5820k just for the mere unknown where dx12 is going to go. They're all so close in performance and price. I just didn't want to say what if down the line.

Also, if I wasn't chasing a theme for my case and build I would probably have skylake. The z170 boards look awesome!
