[Gamespot] Blizzard Will No Longer Report World of Warcraft Subscriber Numbers. - Page 4

Quit WoW years ago... started dating again, finished school, married my beautiful wife, got a real job, bought a new house, had kids...best decision I ever made.thumb.gif

But in all seriousness, it's quite an accomplishment that they still have 5.5 million subscribers after this many years...

Don't worry, the game will be around for a while. In 20 years pirates will run it on tungle long after the servers are down.

Lower numbers are to be expected, due to the game's age, player saturation and the fact that MMORPG's in general have been way more popular than they are right now. Still a shady move though. I don't want to see WoW die, but this sucks.

Clearly blizzard set the bar and myself like most people think blizzard hasn't kept wow on that bar over the past few xpacs but I don't get how we blame the entire genre on wow.

Additionally as others have said I don't see it going anywhere. As long as operating costs for the game are lower than what they bring in I don't see it going anywhere. I mean why would you stop something that makes money and I doubt they need nearly as many subs as they have to do that. I would also like to know how they count the wow token. The wow token should count as a monthly sub. So I don't know if that figure they have now includes those.

When WoW is the golden standard that everyone is trying to either "beat" or "avoid", you get a bunch of games that are just WoW with different skins, or totally broken games that toss the baby out with the bathwater.

WoW itself was not all that different from MMOs that came before it. A little more polished up, a bit dumbed down for the masses, and running on a more modern engine... that's it. It didn't really innovate in any way, and all the copycats that have come since are just continuing the tradition WoW started of rehashing the past with better graphics and worse everything else.

MMOs are no longer viewed on their own merit, they are simply held against WoW, and as such, never really evolve.

I'm pretty sure that no other MMO out there has 5.5M subscriptions, bots or not. And how could you blame every other MMO out there for modeling so much after WoW, when it was (and still is, refer to my first sentence) so successful. Yes, people want something new and different, but money talks, and any AAA studio pushing out a game isn't going to make a game that only a fraction of the community wants. That's not just how it works - hence why we have small/indie studios cropping up left and right these days to make those games for us.

And it's shaping up to be that Overwatch is Team Fortress meets League of Legends - something a little different, but not original.

I think Blizz will be just fine, regardless of how much those of you out there hate them. tongue.gif

Just give me a new D3 xpac and make us fight Imperius and Tyreal.

That's the irony.Sure, a lot of people want WoW, but you are never going to make WoW by making a ripoff of WoW, you will just be making a WoW ripoff. No one wants a WoW ripoff. Heck, people don't even really want WoW any more, they just want their rose-tinted memories of WoW's past.

I agree with you there, stop cramming the same recycled stuff down our throats please - studios should spend some of their monies on doing proper market research and getting a feel for what we do want. Pretty sure with today's technology they could easily send out mass survey's, get them back and have them crunched to see what people are really looking for/desiring in games.

I personally think that a game that had select able "layers" would be neat. You could choose when starting a new game how much depth you would like in it (like one layer would be advanced stats for characters, or craft able components, extra story dialogue, etc) so then people who really just wanted to play something for the action, or just the story, could do just that. Then you could replay it with different layers activated for more depth and different gameplay experiences.

Source code is actually a pretty good movie.
He also directed moon, which I also think is a great movie.
Who do you want them to bring? Michael Bay? That every time an orc sneezes an explosion happens in the background? That every other word a human say is "orcs!" and another explosion happens in the background?

The movie is most likely (at least from the previews shown) is more about the story and less about brainless action with pew pew and boom boom happening. And for that, he is a pretty good director.

Anyway, the movie is all about making hype to sell the game to more people. There were plans for years to make it, and they were delayed constantly. Now they just have no choice with the decline of subscribers.
