I'm actually not in the "know" of users per, etc but, interestingly enough when you do the math, you could almost segregate additional rack space and simply re-aim it's usage towards classic servers - Could even split it off of the main and just limit it...Done deal.
So, I asked and apparently, yes. Active subs are active, period, via by token or not.

Actually, you bring up a good point that I didn't even think of. With subscription numbers dropping over the years, they aren't in a constant battle to keep expanding and adding more and more servers to keep up so surely they should be able to utilize some of their existing infrastructure for classic servers.

Never thought that way too, however I would assume that they knew it would decline eventually so I wonder how much extra infrastructure they actually have.

Edit: The point I failed at making was that they knew it would decline eventually so I'm sure they shed a lot of the extra infrastructure to shed costs.

So for the D3 AH, the racks were custom order from OSCP. Essentially what happens is the resources slave onto each-other so, in a theoretical sense, if 5.5m users are on, then all are at capacity but, if 2.5m are on for example, all of the resources slave together...

Based on that premise, even in a decline, you reach a diminishing return at about 1.5x initial performance...So, if they have on hand, 5000 servers for 5.5m users, at any time, realistically, only about 3000 are active...So you *COULD* dedicate the rest of the cluster to something else.

Let's say they don't scale/slave and they're independant by blade - There's still a point where you could combine resources and segregate certain clusters to create new realms...

You could also, based on what I've seen of the emulators, limit the expansions but, still keep active features...So, hypothetically, this COULD be very easily done by scaling resources in the game.

As to why it hasn't been done? I don't have an answer...With WoW's population dropping like a guillotine, it seems like a good time to actually act on the idea but, who knows.

The fluidity of today's gameplay witht he content of the old xpac would be fantastic. I would love to have Kara or Ulduar be relevant again....My two favorite raids.

I find it still amusing that in all the mmo's i tried over the years none is as fluid as WoW. Just running around feels like a pleasure compared to other games.

I remember when SWTOR launched, I was like really. Ability delay and lag issues with the i believe was the engine really screwed with that game, it should have been so much better. Also the addon capabilities make it great too. The UIs in other games make me cringe sometimes.....most of the time.

Even though the subs are dropping isn't blizzard still maintaining very similar profits? I.E wow token and microtransactions?

So it might just be better to report profits rather than subscribers now that subscribers are not the only means of profits anymore.

Now I remember when the top 20 or so realms (about a year or so ago) were getting an influx of players because the game was bleeding subscribers so semi-populated realms were becoming a wasteland which motivated players to move to the more popular realms making the smaller servers complete wastelands. Then they came up with "connected realms" so it wasn't so bad but it just shows you how relatively unused a lot of their blades were. Who knows though, maybe they scaled down the infrastructure needed to run WoW and repurposed some hardware for HotS, Hearthstone, etc.
