Better set up than 2x7970s?

With Battlefront and Fallout 4 right around the corner, I'm starting to feel that my system is a bit aged now. I originally bought my 2x 7970s when they first were released and have been pretty much happy with them. I have been very reluctant on upgrading, mainly because I would like to upgrade to something that is about twice as good as what I have now.

I know that there's no single card that is out (at a reasonable price) that will be faster than my 2x7970s. Is there anything in either an SLI/CFX set up that is twice as better though? My reasoning is simply, that I've had these cards since January 2012, almost 4 years this next January. They were a great purchase and if it wasn't because I want to run newer games at higher than 1080 (maybe 4k in a few months, when I get a new display) and on ultra, these cards could probably still last another 2 years. I would like for whatever I get, to maybe give me about the same mileage. Where I'm not worried about upgrading in the next 2 years.

So does it make sense to look into upgrading now... should I hold out a little longer for the next wave of cards? Budget is really only around $1,500 or so. My cards are water cooled now and I'd also need to purchase water blocks for the new cards. So that would also be part of the price.

I'd look at getting a new motherboard, memory and CPU probably next year. My 3770k right now is at 4.9 ghz and I don't think it's worth looking into upgrading that.

Any opinions on what you guys would do?

Considering you're playing @ 1080p, I'd definitely hold out. Those are still enough to get the chicken more than cooked for a good while at that res.

True, but I mostly play at 1440p downsampled and any game that isn't DX11 or 64bit, I use gedosato and play at 4k. Obviously not everything is able to be played at that level. Plus my strict 60fps mentality, doesn't allow me to enjoy those games when they are dipping below 60fps.

Some have claimed a 980ti is on par with the performance of 7970 Xfire, if that statement was true than a $1500 budget would afford 2X 980ti graphics cards @ roughly 650-700 a piece depending on the card.
It is hard to find a comparison such as titanX /980ti to xfire 7970s. I'll just leave this vague info here and wait for further response from others. smile.gif

IMHO i would wait until the next gen cards are here, pascal with HBM Memory, so that would really feel like an upgrade, with new technology inside. rolleyes.gif but that's a few months away tongue.gif or wait for the next gen of HBM2 from AMD biggrin.gif
