I love Fallout. I'm a TES/FO fanboy.

That being said:
The game has some bad textures.

That is the easiest thing to mod into a game and it was going to happen any way...
Why publish a game with 60gb of textures when they were going to get modded anyway?

The things that matter:
Static Meshes
Physics
Ragdolling
Fabrics that can get wet/heavy
Gameworks
Tessellation
Weather

That stuff is harder to mod and is hard to pick up on in a streamed video.

Should the textures look better? Yes.
Does it really matter if they fixed the other countless issues? Not to me. smile.gif

Developers stopped using high resolution textures for many games these days and I have NO idea why. Maxed out / Ultra settings of games like Witcher 3 require GTX 980 to run at 60fps and yet Witcher 3 utilizes only about 2.5GB of VRAM. So many Witcher 3 textures use terribly-low resolutions. Thing is that high-resolution textures take up more VRAM, but they do not decrease performance much, which means HD packs for Witcher 3 and other recent games with low-resolution textures would barely worsen performance when compared again vanilla resolution textures.

Consoles have plenty of RAM too, so you can't say that developers use low-resolution textures to make sure these games run on consoles...

I am with you on that. While it may not be on the edge of graphics fidelity or in the same league as Crysis, Fallout never was, now was it? Perhaps Fallout 3 looked good at the time it released but Fallout: New Vegas did not try to break any records concerning graphics, now did it? In fact, it hasn't stopped that game from being extremely popular and neither did it stop it from amassing thousands of mods
and a stable community.

Fallout games have never been about pushing the boundaries of graphical fidelity, and most RPG's don't. People also complained about The Witcher 3 looking worse than it's initial launch announcement, and yet, very few people are able to run it with the amount of details that are currently offered. I think that most people won't notice the imperfections of the game when they're actually playing it. An image is easily studied in careful detail. I mean, I would argue that even Crysis 3 would not look so terrific in just one screenshot.

But, I presume this is a bottomless pitt I am arguing against. Each to his own, I respect the eye wants something too, it just seems that FO4 gets the worst the internet has to offer, simply because W3 looked terrific.

The big one is resource streaming. It is hard to not cause hitches when data is streaming in large chunks without careful programming. Lowering texture resolution takes off most pressure in this area.

Fallout 3 wasn't, but that's because Bethesda had already begun it's era of gamebryo stagnation. Oblivion, however, was. Oblivion was the Crysis before Crysis. Some of us remember that, and feel that Bethesda should be held to that same high standard.

But why?

If resource streaming only requires 2GB to have low/medium resolution textures, then why not raise the bar and use high-resolution textures that require more VRAM? Witcher 3 uses up to 2.5GB worth of VRAM @ 1080p, maxed out on my PC. Why couldn't developers have Ultra+ textures with high resolutions that would need 3.5-4GB of VRAM? Witcher 3 needs only 2.5GB (mostly only 2.0GB) to stream & also pre-cache all the data and textures. Therefore, it could have used high resolution textures for 4GB+ cards.

Additionally, several benchmarks have shown that using high-resolution textures instead of low-resolution textures requires more VRAM, but it is not hard on the GPU. GPU's are not taxed heavily by texture resolution itself and overall performance may go down only a bit if high-resolutions textures are used instead of low-resolution textures.
