CO2 emissions cheating would be far more serious than the NOx "defeat device."

...

While cheating on NOx emissions is one thing, these CO2 irregularities could be far more damaging for VW. CO2 emissions are generally quite closely tied to fuel consumption. If VW was cooking the books to show higher mileage and lower emissions than what you'd actually get in real-world use, it could be on the hook for some huge regulatory fines.

When it rains it pours for VW. Honestly, after all this, I really don't known how they can stay out of bankruptcy. This also effects Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, and Ducati too, since VW owns them. Also, the countries of Germany and Qatar are part owners of VW.

Interesting I don't see VW coming back from this for a while. However its not really going to stop people from buying a VW. I mean who really cares about CO2 emissions other then the regulators. There just won't be as many VW options on the market until they recall and fix the cars they have on road. Just like any other recall.

You know, this is true, funny thing is, most of the cars sold in Central and South America, dont even have these kind of regulations not to mention other places, for me it's just a bubble, just looking to lower the stocks and profit later.

Pretty sure that's also going to trickle down to companies like Lamborghini since (last I checked) they were owned by Audi.

I never really understood. Does having higher emission make the car have better fuel economy?

No. Yes.
Maybe.

A rectangle is a square but that doesn't make a square a rectangle every time.

Reduced emissions could come from variable cam timing or an active compression ratio or you could simply use more platinum/surface area.

EDIT:
This may hurt the mentioned companies budget, but they don't use the econ variants of VW engines (1.4l diesel) in many of those sister companies performance cars.
Maybe in the Skoda Yeti...it was a really cool suv I'd hate to see tarnished.

Technically yes. The more strict the emissions devices, the harder it is for an engine to breathe. An ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) is a huge air pump. The more restrictions you put on the exhaust with filtering, mufflers, catalytic converters, timing adjustments, etc. the harder it has to work and the lower the mileage. Some studies show that if all emission controls were removed from a modern car, they could get anywhere from 15-20% more MPG.

Yup, and the damage of this extra mpg without emission controls are being paid by mother nature, but who cares right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
