I don't advocate removing them, but yes, environmental measures DO impact both horse power and miles per gallon ... and it IS noticeable.

Love Marauders.. one day I'll pick one up as the new family car. Not exactly beasts in stock form but with that s/c pushing in tons of air it wakes them up quite a bit. My jeep comanche has been cat-less and I don't advocate it, either. It did help quite a bit in the 4500rpm+ range where the truck was starving for air (very restrictive throttlebody as well compared to newer Chrysler based 4.0's.. this one is all AMC). However it's currently in restoration anyways, is near 30 years old, and hasn't been used as my daily in years. Not exactly a power house, but makes plenty of torque down low (2400rpm peak torque) for a truck a hair over 3,000lbs so it's fun to launch with the decent 235's I've got on the back. Upgraded injectors (4 port injectors from stock mustang 5.0's), CAI, Straightpipe with a magnaflow muffler, some minor suspension upgrades to stiffen it up, etc. AKA basic bolt ons.

Hardly fast by any means, but it's a fun light truck that can burn rubber, handle decently (for it's age) and can haul 5,000lbs with a class III hitch. Also the strong AW-4 toyota transmission is nice and has been rock solid.

But now I drive a 2013 sub compact due to traveling for work.. Modern cars are VERY boring and drive by wire gets old fast.

Buy an intake flap delete kit, or whatever makes the intake body freeflow (no restrictions).

Usually manufacturers gimp the engine intake by adding a restriction in the intake path to press down emissions even more.

It's sad that you think like that frown.gif, just take a look on what happened to China and their wonderful pollution, they have the most amazing everlasting smog cloud, that in fact is just fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.

And some of the key factor of this happening is the pollution we make, some by mistakes and some on purpose. and what happened with VW is a clear situation where money comes 1st, at least to their CEOs, they dont care if their cars help on making beautiful smog clouds if their bank accounts keep getting cash.

As far as I know thats why California is one of the States with most restictions when it comes to pollution, and cars.

If the overall goal is to reduce our carbon footprint than we should stop looking so hard at the automotive industry and instead work towards revolutionizing agriculture and power generation. That's where we can really make a huge impact.

The ironic thing is that Co2 has little to do with air pollution. It's odorless and natural.
VOC's, sulpher and particulates are what you're actually going to notice when you breathe them. Smog is terrible and something should be done about it, but as far as I'm concerned all the hubbub about Co2 is actually counterproductive.

The big deal isn't about what we breathe though. It's mostly about the greenhouse effect, which does have destructive effect on people's livelihoods. Especially when you consider that the majority of the population lives on the coast.

Thus, the emissions scandal is about as relevant to real life as paranoia about Microsoft collecting data.

Seriously, this has to stop.

I am all for some form of emissions control. But what the EU environazis are trying to implement here are seriously impossible to attain. Each revision to the Euro 5/6 comes with unrealistic deductions of harmful gases they want to enforce. And it's killing the fun of naturally aspirated engines.

Pretty soon V12's will be a thing of the past. Ferrari has gone the hybrid route with the LaFerrari, turbocharging it's 488GTB and California models.

Porsche has done the same with the 918 Spyder

Mercedes has done away with its huge ass 6.3L in the SLS AMG to a paltry 4.0L twin turbo V8 in the AMG GTS. And Honda. The new CTR.. 2 liter turbo. Sacrilegious.

The only ones, i dont really know how they manage to do it,are Lamborghini and Audi through the Aventador, Huracan and R8 models respectively. And we should applaud them for trying to stand in the face of envirobureaucrats who know nothing.

But of course, this will soon be in danger, given thier parent company scandal fall out(VW owns both of them).

This.

I love that people are complaining about environmental issues.....on Overclock.net, with their 4 way SLI and 1600 watt power supplies. House lights dimming/flickering a sec every time they boot up.

"Oh my God, you took your CAT off!!! It's gonna kill us all for 0.000001 HP gain!"

It's truly ironic.
