VOC's, sulpher and particulates are what you're actually going to notice when you breathe them. Smog is terrible and something should be done about it, but as far as I'm concerned all the hubbub about Co2 is actually counterproductive.
Another irony is CO2 production is fundamental to the principle of a combustion engine and since there aren't restrictions on vehicle engine power output, the regulation of a wide range of engines with different energy outputs at the same scale is like expecting bigger engines to be electric, or something.

(Acid Rain)
I thought acid rains were caused by nitrogenous particles(emissions from high temperature combustion), rather than carbon emissions(emissions from low temperature combustion). This jurisdiction seems counterintuitive.

the largest part of most combustion gas is nitrogen (N2), water vapor (H2O) (except with pure-carbon fuels), and carbon dioxide (CO2) (except for fuels without carbon); these are not toxic or noxious (although carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming). A relatively small part of combustion gas is undesirable noxious or toxic substances, such as carbon monoxide (CO) from incomplete combustion, hydrocarbons (properly indicated as CxHy, but typically shown simply as "HC" on emissions-test slips) from unburnt fuel, nitrogen oxides (NOx) from excessive combustion temperatures, and particulate matter (mostly soot).
- Wikipedia - Exhaust Gas Composition

You know what a great way to help reduce this affect?

Keeping your CAT on....

In order to reduce air pollution, modern automobiles are equipped with a device called a catalytic converter that reduces emissions of three harmful compounds found in car exhaust:

  • carbon monoxide (a poisonous gas)
  • nitrogen oxides (a cause of smog and acid rain)
  • hydrocarbons (a cause of smog)

-What CATS do

Google is a great tool when you dont fully know about things.....

High engine temperatures melt and vaporize the catalytic core - since the exhaust manifold doesn't extend or dilate according to engine rpm to accomodate at the optimal exhaust temperature - so it generates heavy metal pollution as it disintegrates.
This is intended as a general remark, not personal: the whole ordeal is just to convince ourselves we are not polluting the environment, that in fact we are environmentally friendly model while going about our business ignorant as always, in essence to distort our perception of reality that we are being "good" by the consequences of our actions which themselves aren't, actually.

Its a bit naive to dismiss the fact that CATS are there for a specific purpose, to reduce pollution. I dont think anyone has seen them as a "Cure" to pollution, but it has definitely been proven by science that having one on, GREATLY reduces the amount if pollutants put in the air sadly there is no debating that. You obviously cant get away with no pollution what so ever when driving a car (obviously) but again, the impact made is greatly lessened with a CAT, and I certainly would feel bad if I 'De-CAT'ed' my car, because the gains are slim and the impact is great, so why not just keep it on? and if you are so desperate to to gain your 3% extra HP, then put a high flow on.

There is no ignorance or self-solace in wanting to protect the environment by using a CAT.

With regards to the melting of the CAT, its obvious that CATS wear out, but you replace it then, and Ive owned old cars and have kept cars well into their old age, and their CATS are perfectly fine, no melting, no damage, (Wear yes of course) and a lot of Melted CATS can be attributed to other mechanical faults, and its moot whether its low or high combustion temperatures, because there are an estimated 1 billion cars in the world, all with different engines and different temp operations, and all emit pollution, so toxic gas is being spurted out no matter what. So why not (not a personal jab here) just put yourself second and keep you CAT on and help lessen the impact of pollution - passively?

Not possessing an automobile in the first place has that effect on one's self-perception.smile.gif How hard could it be to implement a telescopic CAT, however the stoic in ourselves likes to keep car parts as classical as possible.

Because you need surface area, and the more catalyst metal (platinum, Rhodium etc) the gas reacts with the less pollution is emitted , so telescopic isn't an option, hydrogen is an option but that's a whole new thread.... It's simple ... Just keep the CAT on, has some important benefits, contrary to popular belief...

It needs to dilate when engine is cold at start and extend at high rpm. What is the need for built in obsolescence, other than creaming by holding onto old tech? In fact, platinum is highly reactive and will bind and incapacitate your DNA, rendering your cells unable to maintain their metabolism.
They should make the ICU react to exhaust temperature, cutting engine power, however they rather keep burning the catalyst to lower particle emissions to keep on the good side of regulatory boards, and customer demands, than avoid their artificially introduced higher levels of pollution. Every time we try constricting the problem at any level, we just scale it to a level higher down the chain.
Does anybody think regulatory boards are helping to solve the problem rather than being silent witnesses about it, I doubt so... Lower emission rates just obviate bigger engines however large volume engines don't even make up for the majority of vehicles, so the regulations are bust.

The irony that you worried about the effect of platinum on the body (anyone who has platinum jewelrey beware!!! Think you meant platinum salts?) And not about the dangerous levels of toxic fumes put out by non catted cars?

Trust me, your liver lives up to its reputation dealing with toxic organic chemicals that are anions. Heavy metals on the other hand are cations and I recall a few of them that cannot be cleared from the body no matter what. It is of course within your prerogative to ingest them rather than the organic compound emissions which are somewhat naturally found in the nature. It is just counterintuitive. You can continue living with half your liver and one tenth your lung volume however you cannot live with a growing tumour.
Inert metals were never the issue. It is just that they cause chronic inflammation and that usually ends up in worse consequences.
