[Gamespot] - More Women Own Consoles Than Men in the US - Survey - Page 10

My God, READ THE OTHER COMMENTS!

The study doesn't explain WHY the women bought the consoles. As we've said over and over and over AND OVER again, it only says they bought them. It doesn't say they bought AND PLAYED them.

"More Women Own Consoles Than Men in the US"

I'm being critical of the wording, the methodology and the implication. Those women who bought a console for their children might consider ownership of them even if they never even power it on.

So basically the headline is meaningless.

Another useless statistic:
Most people have an above average number of limbs.

On average, people have about one testicle.

A new study in the US has revealed that more women own games consoles than men, flying in the face of the common perception that the hobby is dominated by male players.

It's no secret that video gaming has become mainstream: video games are now part of nearly everyone's lives, regardless of gender, background and ethnicity. However, a new study shows just how much gaming has changed modern lives, and reveals that women video gamers are even more popular now than ever.

While the stereotype of the young male gamer persists, new research by Pew shows that while 42 percent of adult American women say they own a video game console (like an Xbox or PlayStation), only 37 percent of men do.

The gender demographics for gaming console owners in the United States, according to a Pew Research Center study, break down as follows: 42% of women in the USA own consoles, and 37% of men do. That probably shouldn’t seem surprising or weird, but no doubt it will, given that gaming marketers have been trying to convince us all since the ’90s that games are for boys. Somehow, women have prevailed over assumptions about whether or not they “should” play games, and we’re buying consoles anyway.

Yeah, my Mom has a Wii. Funny thing, I played it more than her, though I did manage to get her into playing Kirby and Mario Kart a few times. Otherwise she plays the most on her tablet which is the first electronic device I ever seen her like so much.

I think why I turn out as a odd ball for a gal is my Dad introduce me very early to computers, board games, card games, and video games (Also he got me early into fishing, hiking, and hunting). Actually it was my Dad's Mom who bought me my first console. biggrin.gif

Agreed.
My wife can't possibly buy a console from the ironing board.

I can see where these "statistics" come from. During the holidays the women on my Facebook would post pictures of the PS4 or Xbox One they got as gifts for their significant other - some broke up and got the console back and use it for Netflix now I think. tongue.gif

They would ask who purchased the console, just like the study says... it is very clearly a study on who purchases products, not who uses them.
kookoo.gif

Where did this even come from? Why is it relevant?

Hint: A vast majority of Baudrillard's work is on how mediated images (i.e. the way the press disseminates information through "disaster porn", 24-hour news cycles, catastrophes both ecological and manmade, etc.), like this study, are used to skew perceptions of reality in order to fit political agendas and establish order over a discourse's subject - kind of like you are arguing... are you sure you know what you're talking about here? doh.gif

Don't get me wrong - I have no real stake in any gamergate nonsense (other than observing knee-jerk reactions to apolitical statements that allows otherwise reasonable people make hyperbolic twists in logic), and I don't think this study means anything, but that's just it - there's no feminist agenda here, there's no talk of women being the new gamers or whatever, Anita Sarkeesian and co have not used this study to further any agenda... so what are you guys on about?

As far as I can read the study merely shows which demographics purchase which kinds of technology... any other conclusions you folks draw are just leaps of your own imagination, and the very thing you're accusing "SJWs" of doing...

I specifically mention that it's because women buy their kids consoles. A few pages before the quote of mine you took. Yes it's the title that is the part trying to mislead people, and if it wasn't they wouldn't have worded it like that.
