moving from amd to intel

Thread Starter
ive been with amd all my gaming life but ive had enough. im switching from fs9 to fsx and amd cpus simply dont cut it. im thinking of a intel i74790k but not sure about the motherboard.

i will only ever run one g/card. i have 4 ssds on my current system. i will be changing the mobo, cpu, ram and will need a decent cooler for it. wont be going crazy with overclocking.

any suggestions on a motherboard? i wont ever run sli or crossfire btw. not into all the fancy features etc.

also would it be necessary to do a clean install of windows.

If you can not afford an i7 5820K, then I would look for a used i7 3930K or 4930K and go from there.

FS is probably one of the most poorly developed games on the market. You are going to need all the horse power you can get in order to really max everything out.

I would also look at getting a used GTX 780 with 6GB of memory. I have seen a lot of people eat up video memory like crazy because of mods and graphical enhancements.

why not a 6600k if your games prefer better singlethread performance

Cause FSX can use more than 4 cores.

a 3930K running at 4ghz+ will be a bit faster.

I am not kidding. All common PC building practices go straight to hell with FSX.

Not only is FSX terribly optimized and poorly developed but it\s also over 9 years old at this point and so is a 32-bit application.. The 3rd party addons are the only thing that have kept it going for this long. OP I recommend giving other simulators a look like Prepared 3D (basically an optimized FSX though there seems to be licensing issues with it) and X-Plane. I have personally been using XP for well over a decade and wouldn't touch FSX with a ten foot pole but that's just me.

As for MOBO's I have a 4790K on a Z97-A and haven't had any problems with it.

Obviously the points about x plane and p3d are good and I reckon I'll switch to p3d in a couple of years but most of the pay ware Addons I bought for fs9 also came with an fsx version so it's gonna cost me little to start on fsx.

Single core performance is why I'm ditching amd for Intel. I don't wanna spend more than 240 on the cpu and was hoping a mobo for about 60 ish would be ok for the i7. Are there any CPUs as good as the i7 4790 k with similar performance but cheaper?

You don't like dual channel RAM operation, Pontiac? Costs the same to do it right as it does to do it wrong...

Yeah, but its also more cost efficient in the long run.

Plus as ram prices drop, 16GB will start to become the new standard anyways.

So run single channel until then? I don't see the logic.
