yeup. Dual channel is not going to give you a huge advantage in performance.

If you do video editing or 3D rendering then sure, get dual channel.

For gaming. Meh.

I personally am only running a single 8Gb stick. I know for a fact that much better and cheaper ram is right around the corner so I am waiting to buy the good stuff rather than just blowing my money on quad channel ram which will do nothing for me.

any suggestions on a motherboard? i wont ever run sli or crossfire btw. not into all the fancy features etc.

also would it be necessary to do a clean install of windows.

Curious as to what you get for FPS in FSX with the 6300?

FS is probably one of the most poorly developed games on the market. You are going to need all the horse power you can get in order to really max everything out.

I would also look at getting a used GTX 780 with 6GB of memory. I have seen a lot of people eat up video memory like crazy because of mods and graphical enhancements.

Shoot, can you even find a use 6gb 780?

Isn't FSX one of those games that love strong single cores? Seems like going with the stronger single core performance of Skylake i5 makes sense in that case saving money in the process. Least I don't see the need to spend more for extra weaker cores you won't need.

Yea, that's what I thought.

Not saying that the i5 is the better option in all cases, just for this game the stronger single core performance of a 6600k will win out over the superior core count/raw power of a 5820k. This would also be the case in most mmo's I've played and any other game that loves strong single cores. DX12 might alter that, but, it won't be backwards compatible.

If it were me, today buying a CPU I'd take the 5820k for the extra cores. I'd then OC it. However, I play a vary wide range of games. Though personally I don't buy main components unless it's within a month of release (CPU/mobo/gpu).

I built a PC for an old guy a while back. He told me about the game and I did a bit of digging.

I ended up finding the "FSX Bible" and followed it. There are some mods you can do and some things you can setup in order to spread the load out.

Unfortunately I did not have enough time to test out if it worked or not, but enough people on the forum all seem to have had tangible success.

I just downloaded the newest version of the demo, at ultra settings I was pretty much locked at 60 fps ( limited by the game i believe) . That was with the framerate target set to "unlimited". Vishera 8 core , 4.9ghz 780ti at stock.

Thread Starter
Getting decent frame rates at max settings is no problem on a 6300. But when you start adding add ons like planes, scenery textures, then your frames dive bomb.

Anyway, I'll be buying an i7 4790k.

I've been looking at motherboards. The z97 seems to be a popular choice. Will I loose a lot of performance if I go with a cheaper board? My budget for a mobo is about 70 quid.

I am making the move from AMD to Intel also.

You may want to consider the new Skylake Core i3 6100 @ $124. I think it is the best bang for your buck budget CPU out there. It amazingly beats out the Sandy Bridge Core I5 2500k in CPU intensive games. And it blows away anything in AMDs product catalog.

Get it for $124, MSIs Mortar mobo for $119 and some 2666 MHz ram for about $60 and you would probably be good.

Type in 'core i3 6100 review' on youtube and look at the reviews from Digital Foundry. They are very impressive.
