ZEN - Hyper Thread - Page 60

Thread Starter
“In an interview with eWEEK before the presentation, Mike Clark and Sam Naffziger, AMD Corporate Fellows, talked about the challenges presented to them and other engineers four years ago when they were tasked with overhauling the AMD microarchitecture to create a core that will enable them to better compete once again in a processor space that not only included traditional rival Intel but also newer competitors in ARM and its array of manufacturing partners—such as Qualcomm and Samsung—and a revived IBM and its new OpenPower effort”.

“The key from the beginning was achieving the performance gains while keeping power consumption down, Clark said. With Zen, energy efficiency was going to be just as important as performance”. Nella prima intervista riguardo Zen, Keller disse: “We know how to do small dense cores and we know how to do high frequency. What I've asked the team to do is take the DNA from both”.

“For me, it wasn't the first time, but you don't do it often because it is so daunting. It's going to take a lot of [effort] and time … It comes with a lot of risk”.

“As the lead [on the core development], I picked 'Zen' as the [codename] because zen is a balance. We needed to balance the whole thing to make it work”.

Interesting interview.

Any new benchmark?

Those MT scores look all wrong. There's no way a chip with an ST score of 1141 should score ~15k with 32c/64t chips in 2p configuration.
The only way it scored that multi thread score is to keep cores at 1.4ghz all the time during multi thread benches.
I think the core speeds were fixed at 1.4 Ghz for single threaded, otherwise I considered too slow, vishera does the single threaded at about 900 score points at the same speeds, also maybe the system is not very effective in multi threaded, If I take the multithread effectiveness of the vishera at that core speed, 32 threads are capable of that same score. Maybe some throttling is going on.

Why did AMD disclose more INFO about ZEN architecture 6 month before release?
I expect that the Geekbench leak was accidental, caused by some crazy board partner or system integrator evaluating pre-release hardware.

any idea of the kind of motherboard there coming with yet?
wondering if we will be getting a btx instead of atx?, as seem more logical to use btx.

Considering how almost nothing out on the market uses BTX it would not seem logical. And with modern heatsinks BTX is completely pointless.
