[VentureBeat] Activision Blizzard opens movie studio to create films and TV shows based on its games - Page 2

Not sure how or why Hearthstone would work as a movie - though cinematics and story I've always found decent in CoD (better than most action movies at least) even if the gameplay is tired. I really want to get behind the Blizzard trio for movies but I feel like they're just milking their old cows to death. D3 was a flop. SC2 was nothing to SC1 (for me, to each their own of course), and WoW collapsed under its own weight due to a number of stupid decisions that trivialized gameplay and accomplishment (again, to each their own).

Wish I could get more excited for this, but as it is... well, time will tell.

You do realize Hearthstone is based on Warcraft right?

Also Diablo 3 has sold 30 million copies, not a flop by a long shot.
And WOW has been going strong with millions of players for 10+ years. Sure it might be down to 5 million subs now, but that's still raking in 75,000,000 dollars every month, going by those numbers I'd say it's far from collapsing. I'm not a Blizzard fanboy by any means, just setting the record straight.

Why would you not milk a still very productive cash cow? I don't understand you people who use this argument.

It's a card game.
If they made a movie, it'd be based on the Warcraft franchise, unless they somehow made it about living cards! thumb.gif

Diablo 3 sold based on its predecessors. While it was not a bad game, and has improved, it is a far cry from Diablo II or I, in my opinion.

If half a structure collapses - whether or not it was enormous to begin with, it's still a collapse!
WoW has plenty of subscribers I know, more than any other Pay to Play out there if I recall and I'm sure the next expansion will be another shot in the arm. But that doesn't detract from the fact that every successive expansion since (including?) Cataclysm has been met with less love and numbers plummeting faster than before. While it could just be the age of the game and the kids that grew up with it, I would argue it's at least split evenly between gameplay changes - which no one can deny have been substantial - and age.

I would! But cows age and die. Are you still going to love the Diablo and WoW franchise ten years from now?
I never said this would be a flop or a fail, just lamented the lack of something new and the admittedly subjective feel that things have gone down hill.

Pretty much. They kinda missed the boat. As soon as WoW hit it big, they should have had syndicated cartoons, toys, etc...

If.

You want me to start naming all the card based anime? tongue.gif
Believe me, there are a lot so it is not as crazy as you might think.

Looking at the Warcraft trailer earlier, my only thought was how much more awesome it would be if it was a Starcraft movie.

I'd watch a Starcraft movie as long as it was all CGI. The warcraft movie trailer just looked weird seeing real humans mixed with cgi orcs.. they should have just went all CGI like beowulf.
