The M.2 is 22 mm wide, slightly less for the actual chips, 14 mm will not cover the chips they need to cool.

Thanks, Wolftame. A pox on the person who said they were 14mm heat sinks since I've already ordered them.

So I have two computers...

My primary (Antares in Sig) is booting Win 7 Ultimate, off a Samsung 950 Pro.

My secondary rig (Nyarlathotep in Sig) is booting Win 7 Home Premium; off a much older Plextor PX-256M5S SSD...

I just got home from work this evening and hit the power button on the Primary; then reached over and hit the power button on the secondary... perhaps 1 second apart...

The secondary then booted to Windows desktop a good 5 seconds faster then the primary.

I'm perplexed here....

How could a much older Plextor, boot to Windows desktop faster then the 950 Pro?

Could it be because its booting Win 7 Home Premium and less items to load... while the 950 being my primary rig with Win 7 Ultimate and has more items to load?

Lol, wait until these get released, 14nm heat sink will be plenty for the entire SSD. Samsung crazy innovation yet again. 2016 = up to 4TB Storage + 4GB of DDR4 cache onboard + 5GB transfer in 3 seconds, hard to believe. biggrin.gif

Yeah no kidding, but thankfully those small 20mm SSD's will most likely stay in the mobile market. It wont come to a PC near you, lol. Its probably meant to bring mobile devices such as smartphones to have real SSD's instead of the much slower eMMC. With a real SSD, with real SSD speeds they now have a reason to implement and take advantage of USB 3.1 micro ports on our tablets and phones, media devices etc.

On SSD's meant for the M.2 slot or PCIe such as the 950 Pro, the chips will continue to get faster and much higher density, but still too physically large for a mobile devices hardware.

Hi,

I am unable to get my 950 pro connect at 4x. It seems to be operating at 2x gen 3.

It is a MSI X99A SLI PLUS mb with only a GPU in the first PCIe slot. GPU works at x16 gen 3.

Have anyone solved something similar?

Thanks!

Check if the slot you're using is sharing bandwidth with some internal device like SATA ports or USB controller.
I will try and disable all SATA ports, I do not use them.

But I thought having 40 PCIe lanes would be enough for almost all configurations?

Note from manual, looks like you need to set a switch in BIOS otherwise half of the bandwidth of the M.2 is given to the PCIe slot. (note underneath table)
Also, when you put a M.2 in the SATA 5 and 6 ports will be disabled (the SATA Express port), I guess if you use them the M.2 might be forced to 2x.
