Hello guys, quick question please. As everyone knows the 950 has built in legacy bios mode for use on older systems without EFI, however I want to know if the 960 retains the ability to boot on older systems? Or did Samsung drop support for booting on these older BIOS systems this time around?

I want to purchase the 950 this coming Holiday season, but not sure if I should bypass it and get the 960 instead. Thank you...

The 950 Pro and 960 Pro will only boot from a UEFI BIOS that supports booting from the NVMe protocol i.e: Z97 chipsets and above.

As far as the 950 pro is concerned, there have been reported cases of boot ability in older systems.

I have mentioned them in older posts, as far as Legacy BIOS is the matter, it has been able to boot in P45 (1 & 2) and X58 systems and also in earlier UEFI systems with no NVMe support (Crosshair Z 990FX)

It is a well known fact that the 950 pro boots from legacy bios devices and has ever since day one of the devices availability. I know first hand that it boots in the Asus Rampage II and many other BIOS only motherboards. I already tested my father's 950 Pro in my Rampage III and it works flawlessly as a Windows 10 boot SSD, but I want one for myself as soon as I can afford it, which hopefully will be in December.

So my question was, did Samsung carry over this BIOS compatibilty mode with their 960 Pro? I assume no one knows yet?

Do these legacy BIOS boards have modded BIOS or is it with stock BIOS?

Stock BIOS. My BIOS is modded of course but only with newer Intel AHCI modules (sata modules) and has nothing to do with UEFI. Samsung included a legacy IDE option rom inside their 950 Pro so that it would be seen as a IDE device on BIOS only boards and is easily selected as a boot device within the BIOS. It is not advertised or supported in any way due to the fact that few Motherboard manufacturers ever bothered to include modules that can boot from PCIe, at least not on lesser cheaper boards. During boot of the IDE device which is nothing more than a handshake to initialize the 950 Pro Windows takes over initializes the 950 and then loads the NVMe drivers. It is incredibly simple to write in IDE option roms on any device capable of booting, IDE has been around a VERY long time and the standard is well implemented. However your board has to have a BIOS that allows booting from PCIe devices and so far I have not seen many comply with that (in other words the bios must see bootable IDE devices ON THE PCIe slot within the BIOS). My Fathers P67 based mobo boots from it (its still using the non EFI BIOS) and his Rampage II which is a x58 mobo and BIOS only. My Rampage III boots from it as tested way back in March and ran insanely good on it (for the day I tried it anyway). I have spoken to people with P45 and P35 chipset based mobos and theirs also has no problem booting from the 950 Pro. It was confirmed a long time ago at both Win-Raid and BIOS Mods forums and here at overclock.net as well.

So I don't know if I should give the 960 a try now to see if Samsung carried over the IDE legacy mode, or just stick with my plans on the 950 Pro (since it may come down in price, lol)? Does the 960 even have any benefit to owning it over the 950? Does it run cooler, or last longer? Being my board is only PCIe 2.0 I doubt there would be any sequential speed differences, but if the 960's response and NVMe implementation has improved that might be a reason. And what about random IOP/s, especially 4K? I think I will wait until January and if it hasn't been answered by then, I guess I will try to answer it myself. I want to retire the sata ports just like I retired my USB 2.0 ports and went to USB 3.1. All my storage is in the server, so I need none of the SATA ports on board and have tons of PCIe lanes to use. Asus kindly gave me a switch to turn off all SATA ports for a reason such as this. I think if your non-UEFI board has a BIOS switch to turn off all SATA ports its a good bet it can boot from PCIe devices, that's my thinking anyway.

Yeah it would work for Z77 and below but you'd need a modded BIOS for the NVMe support.

That's very odd I didn't think Samsung put a IDE Legacy option in the 950 Pro that's news to me. You're missing the important thing here though is that you don't have NVMe support which is what these drives are all about.

NO absolutely false, you do NOT need a modded BIOS. It has been proven over and over again. Please stop spreading false information.

I think you're wrong here you do need a modded BIOS for NVMe support for Z77 and below. I'm NOT talking about your IDE boot support which most people wouldn't use this drive for, I mean full NVMe support.
