Yeah last I heard 960 is hitting mid-October... so maybe as soon as next week (the 16th maybe?)

I asked Samsung yesterday, they said Samsung does not have a public release date for the 960 drives yet, just that it should be releasing sometime in October.

I can't solder a new chipset onto my board and I am not purchasing a new board until it has full Optane support, which could be a year away. In the meantime I have to replace the slowly dying boot SSD I have now and I want it to be a M.2 SSD because I am going to fully retire SSD's that require a sata cable. I want my next SSD to be able to be transferred from this old x58 system to the new 2017 Optane enabled system.

I spoke to Samsung today, spent a while getting my question elevated to a decent tech person and he confirmed their NVMe driver will install on my BIOS only system and work exactly as they intended. However, he had no information about the 960 yet either, and that was the reason I called them. Is the 960 not yet for sale? Oh well I can't afford it until December anyway...

How the holy, hairy heck did you get your call elevated to a decent tech person? The few times I've called them. I got total idiots that refused to elevate the call.

Haha, I used to be the head Administrator and product reviewer at PlanetAMD64 (worlds first 64bit dedicated tech forums and now defunct sadly) so I just used my old contacts from back when I did professional reviews for Samsung Storage products (back when they made HDD's). My PR & Media contact person isn't there any more but the number hasn't changed, and the call had to be transferred because the media people can't really answer questions such as those. Besides, it was a US number anyway so you will always get competent Americans that you can talk to. God only knows what would happen if you use the standard public outlet for contact, maybe a Korean individual who speaks English as a second language, lmao. I have a whole list of contacts from A to Z, from Micron to Microsoft and I worked for Intel for a full decade. The main PR and Media contact person from OCZ is even in my Skype contacts. The only problem is I retired in 2012 so I don't really bother mentioning that part to them. LOL thumb.gif

I have now found several more people who have old BIOS only systems (just look through the Amazon reviews) and using the Samsung provided NVMe drivers, so I wonder now if the 960 will be using the same exact driver or not? I see the 960 Pro is already being shipped to suppliers, but I can't seem to find info on its sale to the consumer. Samsung says the new drives will be available in October, but its almost half way through October now. I thought for sure it would be listed at Amazon already, but nope. I guess late October is what they meant.

Quick question, or Poll if you will. Do you guys think that now that these SSDs are getting so fast that people are looking at them and saying Meh? I mean if you have a 950 Pro or even a 850 Pro, do you think there are many people who see what they have as already fast enough? What if Optane is truly 1000 times faster then SATA SSD's, and a hundred times faster then the 950 Pro, what good will this do for consumers if you can't really see/feel the difference anyway? Especially if the price is higher for the Optane SSD's.

I suspect the 950 Pro 512GB will drop to $250 or less on sites like eBay. I couldn't ignore that kind of price.

Poll: I doubt even moving to the 950 from a fast SATA SSD makes a noticeable impact for me, nevertheless I'm interested in the 960 and Optane after that, depending on Optane drive prices. Considering that hardware I have bought in the past has been used for an average of 5+ years before dying or being thrown out, the cost per month for even a small speed boost is negligible amortized over the life of the drive, at least when they are in the $300 range like the Samsung drives. I also use my machine for professional purposes, so another reason upgrades pay for themselves. Given these two facts, why not have the best of the best? I suspect a lot of enthusiasts will feel the same way and buy the latest and greatest SSDs if they truly measure as faster than the last generation. Think about how much premium people already pay for the 'extreme' editions of CPUs and GPUs, for tiny speed differences. Non-enthusiasts are a different story of course and probably won't splurge. (But Intel says Optane tech is cheaper than flash to manufacture, so if / when Optane drives get cheaper than flash, it'll be a no-brainer for everyone, however long that takes to happen...)
Yeah initially Optane probably won't be cheaper, and if it is, then just wow. I wish I could wait for Optane anyway, but I doubt my Samsung 850 Pro is going to last as according to Hard Disk Sentinel it is down to 80% health already. Thankfully I have several 840 Pro's and C300's I can use as spares if I need an emergency boot drive. I purchased my 850 used on ebay so not sure I get warranty exchange on it if it did die on me.

@mnoc, does your windows 10 & 950 Pro combination sleep properly? When I tested it on my x58 machine my task at hand was to try and clone his Intel SSD to the 950 and although I took the time to install Windows 10 without even asking him, I did not test anything other than a single boot try to the desktop which I was satisfied with. Things like transfer speeds, sleep, hibernation etc I just did not have the time to investigate since he runs a home business off of his computer.

So I have no clue if something as simple as the Sleep function even works on a PCIe SSD. I assume it won't work.

I've called their 1-800 number for SSDs several times. At least their department is in the US. I've spoken to a couple of the agents their, they have Jersey accents. "fuhgeddaboudit" lol

Sorry to reply with a question but this really intrigued me.
So if the drive has IDE support you can install any OS on it right?
Like OS without NVMe support like WinXP or Win2K or even MS-DOS?

Do you know if this legacy support exists only in the 950 Pro or is it also in it's OEM cousin the SM951?
And if so only the SM951 AHCI or also the SM951 NVMe?

I know for a fact that the IDE driver in Windows 7 does support TRIM.
Something most people I see say require AHCI support.
So I'm not surprised that you can even get NVMe from a properly written driver.

I'll answer the SM951 part with my experience.

I borrowed a SM951 a while ago, before the release of the 950 Pro and as found by many other users along the web, it could not boot in my Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z.

I believe it was the AHCI drive, but i'll crosscheck and return with a new post.
