Upgrade, 7970 vs r9 290x vs gtx 970

Hey everyone, i (was) a "proud" owner of a sapphire 7870 which had some factory issue that i only detected after the warranty ended, it causes it to crash sometimes(once a month or 4 times a day).
My friend borrowed his old gigabyte gtx 660 and ive been using that so far, but id like an upgrade.

Im currently handed 3 choices a used 7970 for around 150€, a new r9 290x for around 290€, or a new gtx 970 for 300+€.

Honestly i just want a rig thatll run most games better, namely fallout 4 on 1080p.
I can get the 7970 now, wait some more weeks for a r9 290x with bday money, OR wait till christmas and ill probably have enough for a gtx 970.
What would be the best decision? Money is kind of a big factor in this.

It really depends. Out of the three you mention it's between the 290X or 970. Then it comes to price, performance, temperature, noise and power draw. In my opinion it goes like this:

Price: 290X wins
Performance: 290X wins
Temps: 970 wins
Noise: tie
Power draw: 970 wins

With current drivers, the 290X is actually closer to the 980 than the 970 and in some games actually beats the 980. I recently was in the same predicament as you and ended up going with the 290X. Either way, it's definitely a great upgrade over the 7870.

Can you find a used 290X? That would be your best bet, if so.

Definitely agree with this. There are always deals to be had on the ocn marketplace. Just have to keep an eye out for them.

Cheapest used one in my country is a r9 290 non X with stock cooler for 230€, the cheapest in the european amazon's is a trix 290x for 290€, cheaper than 90% of the used r9 290 and 290x's in my country...
