OpenGL and Vulkan still have optimization issues and pushing LINUX GAMING was not the goal - Pushing the industry, was.

Steam has reportedly already sold a few hundred k, more will fly off the shelves by December.

They've essentially done that...

Steam's giving the industry, exactly what it wanted...It's gonna sell, bigtime.

What are you talking about? "Ever wonder why consoles are the focus? 1 set of hardware. Now, with the steam machines, they have it...And the market is catching on." Not even close on this statement. While I will admit the Steam Boxes are very Intel & Nvidia centric they by no means have a standardized set of hardware. You get Steam boxes that have from i3s to i7s Haswell or Skylake, the GPUs can range from 750tis all the way up to Titan Xs. Now that's just taking the intel/nvidia setups into account, while I haven't seen one myself yet the Steam boxes also allow for AMD CPUs & GPUs to be used. No sure where you are getting the idea that devs will have a standardized set of hardware to work with on the Steam boxes? Also your statement implies that games will developed with the Steam box in mind or directly for it which will not happen. Basically anybody who gets one of these as there main gaming machine will be very disappointed because 99% (if not all) games release for Windows & consoles in the 1st place. If a certain game becomes a hit & makes some money then they start thinking about porting it to linux i.e Steam OS. The bottom line about Steam boxes IMO is a great idea horribly executed. thumb.gif

Bear in mind, the director of Bethesda even admitted that they graphically downgraded Fallout 4 courtesy of the consoles' weakness yet low-end budget PC rigs are destroying them:

The article title
"Bethesda says they had to 'dial some of' the graphics in Fallout 4 back for 'all of these other things" (by some1 with no knowledge in console/pc development environment)

The original content.
"Everything that we do is a balance. We could make the best looking game possible, but we dial some of that back in order to allow for all of these other things". Hines also added: "If you want to pick flowers and make potions all day, then that's what you're role-playing. If you want to go shoot everybody in the head with a laser-musket, then that's what you're role-playing".

Other than the original content(which was an innocent statement answer to a media's question) all the extra stuffs are all all internet users/journalist's self implemented ideas/hypothesis

That might help you better

Use common-sense, albeit common-sense isn't too common now-a-days, why would they have to dial back anything to begin with......PC is unlimited/infinite?

Another self implemented theory at it's fullest, at least you admitted you used a baseless hypothesis from internet trying to prove another hypothesis which has nothing to do with the original statement.

The "limitless/infinate powerful PC" is now having trouble running Arkham knight @1080P in a stable frame time range on 95% of its user base, which ran better and looked better on "the puny console" BO3, AC: unity along with many graphic demanding games are also struggling, Have you ever asked yourself why optimization when "dat powar" is the only thing matters? have you ever wrote an app for tablet devices? using MS visual studio to build a graphic app for windows? or wrote a complex document for an engine with no pre-provided development tool for a none PC hardware? "dat powar" never worked the way as you imaged. direct power comparison by putting console against PC is completely irrelevant.

To tell you a secret that is not so secret, the mere 15%-25% annual performance increase on PC is still light years away from adopt century old Hollywood rendering tricks which mostly done on rendering farm/cluster with minimum run time or camera basis to worry about. Better visual won't happen on TV/monitor screen until smarter and more efficient algorithm are available, usually happens on console first, and with the power of PC, some hardware restricked enhancement can be made here and there. (AA, res, framerate better AO etc)

if "dat powar" can deliver better without console then most indie titles on steam would've delivered long ago instead of look like from dreamcast era.

If Valve was serious about competing with consoles, they need to contract Intel, AMD, and/or nVidia, develop a hardware configuration that cannot be changed for several years, and create an operating system and development tools that can extract maximum performance out of that hardware.

Actually, this is incorrect.

In the past 2-3 years, the hardware market has boomed and we now have 2-3x the typical amount of hardware, than we ever did.

That accounts for about 2000+ unique PC configurations...That's optimization hell.

Developers have been clamoring for a unified setup, for a very long time...and now they've gotten it.

Ever wonder why consoles are the focus? 1 set of hardware. Now, with the steam machines, they have it...And the market is catching on.

OpenGL and Vulkan still have optimization issues and pushing LINUX GAMING was not the goal - Pushing the industry, was.

Steam has reportedly already sold a few hundred k, more will fly off the shelves by December.

They've essentially done that...

Steam's giving the industry, exactly what it wanted...It's gonna sell, big time.

What are you on about? There are 15 billion versions of the steam machines. I am not the average consumer, but these are way too many choices here and when you give someone too many choices, you confuse the average Joe even more.

Wrong, there are too many machines with varying price points and hardware configurations to make a single set of hardware. No different than it is now.

Excellent video explaining why it's going to fail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC6XK8oK4-c
