I don't think that I ever saw a comment on Ars Technica with more than 500 upvotes (currently 538 positive and only 5 negative). That says something about how the community feels about this.
Maybe you are also talking about another problem when you refer to five years ago: dual monitors on Fermi cards was only possible with them at full speed, from what was gathered at the time it was a design limitation and nothing could be done about it. They only fixed it with Kepler.

Here's an article on that: http://www.legitreviews.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-480-gf100-dx11-video-card-review_1258/15
I was expecting a rant on various forced bloatwares but that's really all that needs to be said. tongue.gif

This has existed on both AMD and Nvidia cards for years. The fact that it took this long to acknowledge by Nvidia tells you how much they care - very little. Just like how they didn't care or tell anyone about the 3.5gb GTX 970 until word got out.

Whether this works remains to be seen. Juts be prepared to hand over your email address and do mandatory installs of GFE to get these drivers thumb.gif

Heh, thanks for the reference.

To be honest, this has been the case since I got my 144 Hz panel back in 2013. I saw PCPer's review of that 165 Hz panel and I brought the problem to their attention and they investigated, good on them. Nvidia should have fixed this a long time ago, but I don't think they are entirely at fault here.

The work around I have for this is to set my panel to 120 Hz, then manually overclock it to 145 Hz (Maximum stable refresh rate for my particular panel). Doing that will not increase power consumption at idle since you're still technically using 120 Hz clock profiles.

Having set the panel to the default 144 Hz mode, I can push it to 150 Hz and remain stable, but as stated, GPU's idle behavior will be compromised.

but still, yeah thanks pcper - we see who's ear you have. redface.gif

Actually the issue was brought up here on OCN more than a year ago, back in June of 2014:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1497172/did-you-know-that-running-144-hz-causes-ridiculously-high-idle-temperatures-and-power-draw-on-your-nvidia-gpu/0_30

Bu then again Nvidia already had to know about it if they actually read their own forums... back in November of 2013:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/648304/1080p-144hz-excessive-gpu-usage-while-idle/

And then again in October of 2014:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/779363/144hz-monitor-your-gpu-will-not-down-clock-high-power-usage/
