[Guardian] ProtonMail: encrypted email provider held ransom by hackers

ProtonMail, a Switzerland-based encrypted email provider, was forced offline on Thursday after hackers held the company’s internet connection for ransom by using a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

“ProtonMail is likely under attack by two separate groups, with the second attackers exhibiting capabilities more commonly possessed by state sponsored actors,” the company said. “It also shows that the second attackers were not afraid of causing massive collateral damage in order to get at us.”

I was wondering why I couldn't connect. Haven't been able to read my email in days.

That's almost perfect timing. Some party wants to make irreversible encryption illegal, suddenly Proton gets a planetary scale DDoS that takes down a whole ISP.

The coincidence is strong with this one.

Power like this can only be held by governments. You don't see hacker groups on this kind of scale, and certainly not targeting the very services they use either.

How did things get this way? US VS THEM. It's the natural progression of a system which doesn't account for this level of corruption I suppose. Check and balances were put in place, but not with instant communication in mind for one.

So what can we do now?

Well... I don't know. I'm just another semi-ordinary guy. There's not much I can do. Without the help of others that is. So next time an initiative is on the table against this corruption, next time you have the opportunity to fight for freedom, DO IT! We can succeed.

Protonmail picked the location of Switzerland, to host their servers, because of Switzerland's strong privacy laws so it would be out of reach of spying governments. Possibly, this is the tactic they employ to shut them down.

You guessed it. thumb.gif

I think the fact that governments wants zero privacy so they can spy on everyone without consequences, is going to bite everyone in the ass so bad, that governments will fall.
There are no regulations on it. And one country doing illegal work against other companies and goverments has already stilled some bad blood in the past, and it might get stronger and stronger the more things get dig in.
All in the name of "terror", but the fight against terror doesn't seem to be needing so much privacy infiltration as it is happening today.

Is Protonmail not a Swiss company? Does it not pay taxes in the country? Does the country not have the responsibility to protect its companies?

This attack is exactly the reason we should support Protonmail & SpiderOak. If I were them, I would go on kickstarter and ask for more funding.

They have started a defense fund on gofundme.

Here is an article with new info on Techcrunch.
Quote:
You say the DDOS attack became “unprecedented in terms of sophistication”. Can you explain in more detail what exactly makes this attack so damaging?
Usually, a DDoS tries to just take a site offline. This one was different because it went after an entire datacenter and ISP, hitting nodes in multiple countries just to get to us. The attackers systematically probed the entire infrastructure of the ISP and then launched a coordinated assault on multiple sites.

Doesn't seem like the usual group of "hackers" would have the bandwidth to mount this big of an attack, and why would a hacker group continue an attack on a service they would most likely be using.
