pci-e showing x8?

I have two 980's in SLI. I went into my BIOS and saw both cards are running at x8. My MOBO is an ASUS x99 Deluxe with a 5820k CPU.

I was just wondering that maybe SLI is the reason both are in x8?

per the specs on your board it is set to this by default, it say's you can adjust this in the bios.
my Sabertooth will run 2 gpu's at x16

this is from the the ASUS site under specs for your board.

Well, the 5820K only has 28 PCIe lanes compared to the 40 lanes of the 5930K and the 5960X, so at most you could get 16x on the first and 8x on the second.

The 980 shouldn't be too bottlenecked in games (if at all) in PCIe 3.0 x8, so it's not much of a problem.

Still, you should be able to change it in the BIOS and set the first card to operate at 16x.

not sure how to configure it in BIOS. I did look in BIOS to see what my GPU's were running at. I'll look again for anything I can customize.

So is this not normal for both GPU's to be in x8 while in SLI mode?

According to the image it should be possible to have the first one in 16x mode.

Okay, yeah i got it back to x16/x8. I had an ASUS adapter card in one of the GPU slots, and it wasn't reading correctly the slots where the other GPU should have been which in slot 4. All it showed was slot 1 and slot 2 that were filled. Now it's back to normal: slot 1 and slot 4 @ x16/x8.

thanks for your help guys

As jlhawn mentioned above it's probably just a default setup because it may be assuming that you may be adding yet one more and in most cases PCIe 3.0 16x doesn't give you more performance (as of yet with the current cards).

I'm almost 100% sure that you can change it. It's somewhere in your BIOS, that is a given, I have it in mine, Haswell-E has it too.
