USB audio interface w/ high end headphones?

Thread Starter
so i have a Roland Quad Capture and have been using them with a pair of Superlux HD668B, but i have been wanting to buy a better pair of headphones (HD598, Phillips SHP 9500 etc.) and was wondering if i would need a headphone amp to get the best quality out of them? Is it possible to pair the headphone amp with headphone out of the sound card too?! Any recommendations for a decent headphone amp would be great too. read a lot about those FiiO stuff and it seems worthwhile buying.

Yeah i know the HD688Bs are great (especially with decent-ish modded ear cups), but i wanna use those for outdoor / daily use since the Bluetooth headphones are a bit flimsy and i only use them with my laptop now.

thanks in advance.

thanks for the replies guys. Sadly can't find that headphone anymore (brand new). and that amplifier is sick DZilla, but too expensive. should have mentioned a budget. nothing more than £100 (lower is cooler too if it's better value) and enough to power something like the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X at best as they will be used for studio referencing and gaming primarily.

I read that the ATH-AD700 (non x version) was one of the best for gaming, but it's pretty much un-available now. is there anything similar or just as good?

EHP ODAC and O2 products
Head 'n' HiFi O2 (desktop edition with preamp outputs)
EHP is located in the UK and Head 'n' HiFi is located in Germany/Switzerland.

As for the alternative gaming headphones for AD700:
- AKG K612 Pro @ £103
- Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro LE @ £112
- DT990 "vanilla" @ £105 (has coiled cable vs. straight)
- ATH-AD700x @ £131 (a bit overpriced imho)
Look for better deals from local retailers/HiFi shops. Amazon.co.uk seemed to have better prices for all the listed cans.

Superlux is the undeniable king in the sub-£100 budget.

Wow what a nice list. Yeah, I'm very happy with my Superlux, but i was looking for something better. more so towards gaming and would look nice with a mod mic / similar! Thanks a lot man. Appreciated.

Schiit Magni 2 is $99 US. You should be able to find it cheap through a UK distributor. It is a very very good amp for the money. Yes you can run it from your soundcard or USB device.

Personally not the biggest fan of open back headphones.

Some of those will be pretty loud to the rest of the room. They do make closed back headphones with good sound stage.

I have the older ATH-A700, and the sound stage is pretty good. Sound is good, great for gaming. Good for Music, clean bass. Not overly too much bass like some headphones. I picked them up over the M-50's mostly because the M50's are like beat competitors. Over emphasized bass, and no sound stage what so ever. There are only used as desk headphones. And they do a good job of it. I'm a speaker guy, so I need a sound stage.

The Schiit Magni 2 is also a good headphone amp for the price.
Also so is the FiiO E09K

Schiit Magni 2 in the UK @ ~$136 (yes, it's the official distributors price)
O2 in the UK @ ~$117

O2 is cheaper so I wouldn't recommend Schiit.

Only thing I don't like about the O2 is all the inputs and outputs are on the front. So Not a neat looking device.

Also the Schiit Magni 2 is made in the USA. So it will last.

So IMO the Magni 2 is the better option.

But if you are going to get the Matching DAC at some point in time. Best to just get the Aune X1S now. As it has a killer DAC already inside, and the internal Headphone amp is more powerful and cleaner than either of those. Comes at a cost though. Freaking awesome piece of equipment.
