Asus R9 290X randomly reboots computer under load

Thread Starter
Hello. As the title say, my 290x started to randomly crash the pc during load. It started this week, and its always a hard reboot, like when you press the restart button on the chassis, no BSOD, no error, nothing. At first I thought it was the cpu overclock, but I reverted to stock and the problem persisted. The gpu is also at stock setting. Already tried the gpu in the second mb PCI-E slot, tried different combinations of PCI-E power cables, did a clean windows install, tried older drivers and no luck. For now I'm suspecting the PSU or the GPU vrm. One odd thing is that there is a coil whine coming from the gpu under load, that wasn't before (actually it was but barely audible when near gpu with ear.. and now you can hear it with case closed). Tried a few stress tests too, on Furmark it seems to reboot after 20-30 seconds, but on OCCT gpu test it just reboots when the test window appears. I don't know what to do now, I don't even know whats broken if it is... Hopefully not the gpu. Any suggestions are appreciated.

try a different psu,but check if your cpu is stable if it ha sOC
post #3 of 15
PSU likely isn't capable of delivering the required current, or you have the power connectors distributed in a manner that pulls too much current from one circuit.

OCCTs GPU test is one of the highest loads you can put on a GPU, it's even more strenuous than FurMark.

can you see what heat it gets to before reboot?

I had a mate once who OC his card to max and then it started crashing - winter just came, rads on full blast and the comp on the whole was sweating it nuts off biggrin.gif

Well, this is my PSU: http://www.highpower-tech.com/Global/product_page.php?class=20100527154213&id=20121210173928#product
Not the best, but it worked for one year. I heard that Sirtec/HighPower was doing PSUs for OCZ some time ago. I will test the gpu on a 1100w (that should do biggrin.gif) coolermaster tomorrow. Now I don't have access to it.
