Old beast, now just old. Help!

Hey all!

In 2009, I saved up and built what I thought to be a sizable gaming rig. It played many games and saw many benchmarks, and for its run, it did me proud.
However, it is now almost 2016 and it's time for a major upgrade.
I've always found these forums to be friendly, informed, and valuable. I'm truly hoping to get some solid advice, even if said advice isn't what I want to here. I'm looking to use as many pieces of my old rig as possible, although to be quite frank, I doubt many things will transition well. My current rig as she stands:

AMD 1100t 😔🤓
Asus ROG crosshair IV Formula
XFX HD 5870 2Gb
4gbs Kingston hyper x 1600
Silverstone strider 750w PSU
Corsair H70
OCZ Agility II 60gb SSD
WD Caviar black 750gb hdd
All inside of a corsair obsidian 800d case

I'm looking to game at 1080p possibly higher if I can find a "can't not have it" 120hz panel.
I'd love to be able to play most games on high or even some maxed. I used to be into benchmarking and whatnot but these days I truly just want to play games like battlefield with crisp detail. I miss having an up to date rig that I won't be discouraged by when wanting to purchase a new title. Albeit, my rig currently does OKAY. But it's just time.....

Any and all advice and suggestions will be wonderful.
Also. I plan to post this in the Intel and AMD sections as I am a bit old school. I don't favor one manufacturer over the other simply because they appeal to two different markets of gamers and, as has been seen over the proverbial 'long run' , because both have shocked us with amazing, and disappointing products, regardless of who's on top this month. Let's keep the drama and ranting to minimum please. I'm not about all the trash talk. Just looking for advice.

Thanks in advance you guys!

What's your budget?

Looks like you can recycle the PSU, case, cooler, HDD.. Also nothing wrong with the SSD if you just run the OS off of it, and you could grab another 4GB of the same RAM, 8GB will be plenty for gaming.

I'd grab an i5 or i7, hyper threading isn't exactly necessary for gaming but certainly helps in games like Battlefield.. Motherboard and GPU will depend on budget.

Budget will be very important to have an idea what to help you with. Like Death2Consoles said, and i5 is more than enough to play all modern games. I run one myself recently built but I may be moving to a X99 platform as I have a new board here just waiting. If you can also wait I think AMD is releasing their new chip early next year. Also I run a game on my wife new upgrade Intel G3258 with a R7 360 GPU and seems to do amazing for a little duo core. biggrin.gif That is another budget option to old you over. I think you have many ways you can approach any upgrade you want including z170 but those are a little pricey but not to bad. thumb.gif

Thanks for such quick replies!

My budget would be about $1700-2000 MAX
Any more and my wife will shoot me.

Although the prospect of waiting for a potential great deal/performance chip to surface sounds tempting, I'd really like to get something going sooner than later. As I've always seen it, in the world of custom computers and builds, if you keep waiting for something new, you'll never stop waiting lol.

Any idea where I may be able to get a few bucks for my old parts to help out with new ones?

Thanks again. Truly.

Is this system mainly for gaming or are you doing anything intense like video editing, audio recording or photo editing etc..?

With that kind of money you can do pretty much whatever you want.. If gaming is most important to you, I'd allocate about $650 for the GPU and look into a 980Ti.

Do you plan on re-using any parts such as the power supply and case or are you looking to rebuild from scratch?

Phenom II's still pack a punch. Try upgrading RAM and Graphics Card and see where that takes you? If you are left displeased, well, you were planning on a new build anyway.

Screw that. Upgrading the memory will leave him in a bad place should he be dissatisfied with the results and chose to replace the CPU as well. Going forward, DDR4 is the only sensible choice so all that upgraded DDR3 will go to waste (yes, yes, it isn't super duper faster than DDR3, big whoop, you still need it for compatibility reasons unless you plan on building an outdated machine).

With the budget the OP is looking at, the best route would be to replace the CPU, GPU, RAM, and MOBO. For gaming, whether you like them as a company or not, Intel's Core i5 is king, and anyone who says otherwise has their head in the sand.

Everything else can be kept as is. If you really want to use up your whole budget, throw a new SSD in there as well.
