To upgrade or not to upgrade? gtx 780 1440p - Page 2

post #11 of 20
I'd personally hold off for now, and buy the next big GPU from Nvidia's Pascal or whatever AMD will offer.

to answer OP's question, there are single cards that'll offer you a 2x fps boost compared to your 780. Whether that's what you want or you still wanna hold off is up to you.
post #13 of 20
I was in similar position, but i have 970. Couldn't make a decision for about a month and half and at the end i pulled the trigger on 980 Ti. Who knows when Ti versions of Pascal cards will come out and i had the money so i don't feel sorry at all.

As someone who owned 780 sli and went to a 980 Ti just a week ago, I would say that either go with a 980 Ti, or wait it out.

Also one last question, if I do get a 980 Ti, will an i5 2500k@4.5 be just fine? Was playing fallout 4 and both my 780 and CPU were at 99% usage on high settings constant 60fps with dips to 55fps every so often on my 1440p monitor. So what does that all mean?
post #16 of 20
depends on the game, but generally yes. my 980Ti ran fine with 3570K, but I still upgraded to 4790K which allowed me to bump the settings a bit.

I was literally talking to a co-worker of mine this morning who also was experiencing very high CPU usage with his OC'd 2500k in Fallout. That game can be very CPU intensive, especially when you go outside and have an entire landscape that the computer needs to render. Personally, I think OC'd 2500ks are still perfectly fine for gaming. Is your CPU holding the system back? Technically yes but you have to decide if that bottleneck is big enough to justify a CPU and board upgrade as well. Another thing to keep in mind is that you are running your GPU in a PCIE 2.0 slot with a 2500k most likely. Modern GPUs can saturate and bottleneck a PCIE 2.0 connection now days. Adding a more powerful GPU like a 980 Ti will only make the PCIE limitation worse. If you chose to upgrade your CPU, you would also see a boost in your GPUs performance by letting it sit in a PCIE 3.0 slot. There are plenty of videos and threads on that topic but by my own testing, switching my PCIE slots from 3.0 to 2.0 in my BIOS cost me about a 7% loss in my benchmark scores and ROUGHLY 5-10 FPS in games like BF4 with my 780s and even more so with my 290xs.

Your GPU usage being at 99% is fine. It means the card is being utilized. When you see low FPS and low gpu usage, you have an issue.

truth is, 2500k -> 4690k may be a small jump, 4690k - 4790k may be a small jump, DDR3 2133 - DDR3 2400 may be a small jump, PCI-E 2.0 - 3.0 may be a small jump. But you see, when you consider them all together...

I wouldnt upgrade CPU to mainstream Haswell or Skylake. Not much value in your upgrade, beyond the platform change. (Z170 motherboards are far superior to P67).

Personally, I am waiting for Skylake-E or whatever mainstream comes out at a similar time.
