Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 Overclock Derp

Hello. I registered only for posting about this topic, overclocking the GTX 970 G1 Gaming. I took some time, perhaps brief, looking at different topics about this specific card. I also read various guides which were mostly similar.

The basic premise behind overclocking presented within each guide: look up different results. Benchmark stock card. +10 MHz until unstable (artifacts, it crashes, etc). Boost voltage for +10 until stable again. Repeating this until max heat or voltage. Same for the memory.

Included are the following screenshots:

  • GPU-Z screenshot for stock settings
  • Heaven stock results
  • Valley stock results

Required tools:

Overclocking software, MSI etc.

GPU-z for verification

Benchmarking software

I used GPU-z, MSI for overclocking, both Unigine (Heaven, Valley)

Okay, now. Onto the subject.

Card stable at stock. These scores:

Games work fine. MGSV:TPP looks awesome maxed out. Metro: Last Light works on Max just low AA. ETC

Anyways, these are the stock numbers via GPU-z:

Now, I work on doing +10 on the MHz until reaching about +80 or +90 before weird distortions show up, lines or like textures (I guess) flash garbled. The sky, for a quick moment, looks split open at places.

I thought "Okay, 'artifact's whatevers. Boost the voltage right?" Nope.

I boosted the Voltage +10 until about +50 or +60 before realizing that it was not affecting the artifacts.

The benchmark completes anyways, a 3 FPS upgrade at best.

Is my GPU just an asstastic bin selection?

Also, the benchmark shows ~1500MHz except the GPU-z real time graph shows about ~1400MHz

Also, how does GPU boost affect this whole process?

I thought I would just pop up the MHz +10 until it distorts or 'artifacts' show up then boost the voltage.

This whole time the temperatures were around 60 or 70 Degrees Celcius, MAX.

TL;DR:

Stock card +80MHz on upwards at +0 Voltage, 100% or 110% Powered MAX, generates artifacts. Increasing the voltage ANY AMOUNT has zero effect on the artifacts. Crap chip, bad bin? Stock overclock basically at max already? Is +80 even worth the overclock? Should I work on a different overclocking software instead?

Yep sounds like you lost the overclock lottery. FWIW my G1 970 was also a craptastic overclocker which would crash at 1450mhz.

Doing this again starting at step one. Everything seems stable except for that one weird thing involving Heaven benchmark.

EDIT:

@ 112%

Reached +135MHz

Stock Voltage

Minor black looking screen tears.

+15 Voltage

Dropped FPS almost half.

+30 Voltage

...

Reset MSI settings STOCK

Half FPS still.

...

Restarting PC.

Same settings, FPS normal again...

Is this normal?

Edit 2:

Very normal, apparently. Updated original post.

Sound like your card is low ASIC one ? anyway you can push it more with custom bios "higher voltage & higher TDP & boost off " , If you'r willing to flash custom bios check my Sig

Nah, though I felt my memory OC was low. Surely the boost on real performance was minimal. Still a fairly new card. I played Portal 2, Skyrim, Crysis 2, etc max @1080p MSAA. Seems stable. Dialed it down just a little.
