The cultivars we grow and the domesticated animals we slaughter are all man made...most of these species have seen thousands, if not tens of thousands, of years of deliberate human selection to mold them to human needs.
Nature doesn't give up much freely, not in most places, and humanity would destroy Earth's ecosystem, as well as themselves, even more rapidly if 7.5 billion people all tried to return to hunter-gather means of subsistence.

If we were all vegan the world would be much better off, not even consider the 60 billion animals we would not have to kill each year.
Meat based diets are certainly less sustainable, but that's not going to stop people. People want what they want, and unless the immediate cost is too high, they will have it. The haves (myself, and most people here, included) do not really care about the have-nots, especially if elevating the latter is inconvenient to them.
