ASRock Z97 mobo and iPod Gen2: cannot charge it when system is off :/

Hey guys,

For quite some time now I am facing a very inconvenient issue :/

I have an Apple iPod shuffle Gen 2 and I am using the ASRock Z97 OC Formula as my motherboard. Latest BIOS, Windows 10 Pro, latest Technical Preview build.

My problem is that my iPod does not charge when my computer is shut down and/or when I put it to Sleep.

ASRock is providing a utility called "AppCharger" for this function. I have downloaded and installed this utility and I have applied the recommendations given at the bottom of the utility's page. It does not work. My iPod is not charging when the PC is sleeping or is shut down.

After contacting ASRock Technical support they suggested me to install the latest iTunes in my system. Even though I hate it, I have installed it. It does not work! frown.gif

The ASRock guys told me that an iPad Air and an iPhone 6 they had in their Lab and tested, works fine for them! It's just that on Windows 10 iTunes is required, whereas on Windows 7/8/8.1 their devices could be charged (during sleep and shut down) without the need of iTunes installed.

Well, in my system my iPod is just NOT charging frown.gif
It is charging, so its little yellow light is blinking, only when my PC is running, like right now.

- Do you have any idea why is this happening?

I want to underline that I do not mind about the speed of charging, necessarily. ALL I want is to JUST make it work! But it does not!

- Does a motherboard like the ASRock Z97 OC Formula really require a utility to charge a device when the system is shut down/sleeping OR it should work just like that? Like setting something in the BIOS and in Windows, perhaps?

I have connected my iPod in almost all the USB3.0 ports of my system: on the front panel, on the back panel. I have also connected it on one USB2.0 port.

It does not charge.

I sincerely appreciate any ideas-help-suggestions!

Thank you very much!

Did you read this? I think I had some issues getting things to charge as well, but I changed something in the BIOS and it works now.
Quote:
* The charging capability may vary with different power supply design. The more +5V standby current provided, the better charge efficiency you get.
** Please connect the devices to the PC USB ports before the PC enters S1/S3/S4/S5 mode to enable a fast charge.
*** To support APP Charger under S5 (Shut Down),
A. If you could find "Deep S5" in BIOS SETUP, please set the option to [Disable].
B. If you could not find the Deep S5 option, please set BIOS > Advanced > ACPI Settings > "PCI Devices Power On" as [Enabled].

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, I have read and applied those recommendations. I say this on my first post. When it comes to my PSU's +5V standby current, and capability in overall, well...I own the two PSUs shown in my sig_rig. Currently I am using the EVGA. It is considered a very nice PSU and it is functioning awesomely on my system! For example, I have never faced any issue in any O/C attempts I have tried with this EVGA or with my Corsair PSU. So, I don't think that they are the problem.

Guys, anyone else with an idea or a suggestion?

I'd like to know this, please: a motherboard like the ASRock Z97 I am using, is it supposed to charge a device without any utility installed? Can it do that, should it do that, without any utility? Or is it compulsory to install a utility like the AppCharger for the motherboard to charge a device when the system is shut down or sleeping? I do not mind/care about how fast the device will get fully charged. I'm just trying to figure out why it does not work at all, on my system!

How can I verify this with another device? What should I use? (I do not own an iPhone or an iPad).

Thank you.
