Reinstall Windows 7 or go Windows 10?

Thread Starter
Hey guys I have the cd for Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate and was wondering should I install Ultimate/Professional (which one?)

or should I make the jump and go Windows 10. I am very used to Windows 7 and love the simplicity of it. I also heard we lose a lot of "rights" with Windows 10.

However, since I plan to do a fresh install, what would be the wiser choice?

System:
Asus Rampage V Extreme
5930K (no O/C)
32GB Ram
TitanX SLI

Would appreciate any help

I recommend going for Windows 7 and stay so far away from Windows 10. It may be a updated OS and a good one but i hear too much issues but that's normal for a operating system. It's just me. I am sticking with my current OS. I rather not have Windows 10. Not interested in it. Windows Professional is for businesses and Ultimate is regular like Home Premium. I'd use Ultimate.

I vote for windows 10. I really do not get the paranoia associated with windows 10. I feel the changes made are positive - but to everyone their own.

EDIT: I think you will have to install windows 7 first and then upgrade to 10. If you do not like it you can revert back to 7. So I say take the plunge.

I see, so there is no benefit if I go out and purchase windows 10? I wonder if I can dual boot the two of them on my SSD.

With that, I did have my corporate Windows 7 Enterprise edition I could install, but I doubt there is a benefit of that. For my steam games and such, I will move those to a seperate hard drive so I lose the least amount of info on the fresh install. I want to do a clean install since I plan to O/C this setup, and lately I have been stuck in an infinite boot loop every now and then with my wireless keyboard / mouse.

I figured a fresh install is definitely needed.

On a side note, I could do a windows 10 upgrade first to test it out. However, would any 'defective settings' transfer over?

Paranoia aside, Windows 10 didn't feel right to me.
Better than 8 by a mile but they kept the tile stuff.

I hate the flat tiles and flat everything on 10.
I used it for a few months trying to get used to it (I still like XP over 7).
Nope....hated it.

Other than Dx12 I don't see any reason to use it.

I thought MS is still dolling out win 10 for free to upgrade from win 8 and win 7. So yeah - install 7 and then upgrade it to win 10. If you do not like it, you can either do a fresh install or revert back to 7. Do not know about any 'defective settings'. What do you call a 'defective setting' anyway?

That is your personal opinion - nothing wrong with that. Win 7 was nice, but getting long in the tooth. I on the other like the flat look. I also like the fact that it is fast boot-up - save me some electricity and pump life. It is also light weight - 8 GB is all it takes instead of 20 GB that win 7 takes. Did I say boot time is fast? Takes for ever my windows machine to connect to network, yada yada. I like integrated search too. And hopefully someone more OS techy can explain some real tech advantages. EDIT: forgot to mention side by side - love it when I have to do look up two docs side by side. Sorry - not enough real estate to have two monitors.

I vote for Windows 10 and this is from someone who installed Windows 8 and had to replace his hard drive a few days later to go back to Windows 7. At first I had some bugs with Windows 10 but now it runs smoothly. Bottom line the look is different from Windows 7 but if you right click the start menu it gives you a ton of choices such as device manager, control panal, cmd prompt etc. all which look and function the same as Windows 7. I would first install Windows 7 Ultimate and then upgrade to Windows 10 Pro (the Pro version is for those with WIndows 7 Ultimate and above). Try if for a few days and if you are unhappy Windows 10 has a dedicated button that will allow you to roll your computer back to exactly the way it was prior to installing WIndows 10 and the process is quick. However you only have a month to use the rollback feature. When I first upgraded I rolled back to Win 7 Ultimate because after a Windows 10 update my startup time took forever. I waited a few weeks and updated again and all is well. One issue, in my experience you may be better off installing your key programs while running Windows 7 and then upgrading to Windows 10 (I had a few issues, mainly with a few older games like Crysis; when I reverted to Windows 7 I did a clean install of the OS and my key programs and only then upgraded to 10. My second upgrade was a much better experience. I also don't see Windows 10 as a resource hog and my Firestrike scores were not impacted by the upgrade and my gaming FPS rates have stayed the same. Who knows it likely uses less resources as they are putting it into Ultrabooks and other useless, overpriced slim machines for those who are unable to handle the weight of a laptop. Another plus (maybe) is Windows 10 runs DirectX 12, although in the past week I saw a review of a new game being tested and DirectX12's impact was much less than what we have been led to believe. Maybe just because the game is one of the first and the coding was off. Just my two cents and a personal opinion, not necessarily a correct one. However at 55 I have used pretty much every version of Windows (and dos before thast) and find Windows 10 to be intuitive and after using it for awhile I would not go back to Windows 7, which I viewed as one of the best from Windows in years. Everyone will have their own opiniion on this so don't forget Windows 10 has a tool in settings that restores you to Windows 7 in a matter of minutes (however you loose programs installed under Windows 10). Good luck

You have till next July to upgrade to 10 so just put 7 Pro or Ultimate (it will only upgrade to Pro) on it now if you're not sure what you want.
A new key can be obtained after you upgrade for a clean install of 10, I'm also pretty certain you could go for a clean install right off the bat later on too if you'd rather not "upgrade"

Like others say, it's all about preference. You'll find 2 kinds of people here on OCN. Those who hate it, and those who are neutral. I went from 7>8.1>10 and have loved every jump. Obviously Windows 10 is going to have some hiccups as it's brand spanking new. I've never really had any problems with it and actually find it quite nice to work with. The best thing I can say is try out Windows 10. If you find that it isn't for you, just reinstall Windows 7.
