Air Stuck in Pump-Bayres / Which Termal Pads for my 290 / What Fans for my rad?

G'day,

To start off with my pump/bayres combo has had air/bubbles stuck in it for quite some time..
I've tried the usual tilt/shake and nothing, even tried stopping the bubbles with a spoon as they come through the loop but they just come back.

No issues with temps, just noisy... Does anyone have any experience with the bayres I'm using or any advice on how to resolve this?

XSPC D5 Acrylic
D5 Variable Speed (speed 4/5)

Secondly, I've been using the stock pads that came with my Koolance AR-290X block for some time, I've read that the stock pads aren't that great and I need some 0.7mm (or thicker 1mm?) pads to replace them.

I know that the higher the rating the better the pad, but does anyone have any cost effective performance pads that they could suggest. I'll probably keep the pads on the RAM VRM as it's already cool enough.

Thirdly, what fans should I get for my radiator? Rad in question is a RX360 currently with three 1,200 RPM XSPC fans in push. I'm considering just going with 6x in push/pull as my case allows it and I already have a spare XSPC the same. That would be the most cost effective solution, but would I see any tangible performance increase? I also have some Noctua fans that I was given, but I only have 2 and don't really fancy spending heaps of money to get more.. They're NF-P12 PWM's.

As far as your bubbles and noise are concerned - Try dropping the speed on your D5. It may be producing way too much flow causing cavitation and thereby producing bubbles.


If you have a fairly simple loop, at a speed of 4 or 5 the D5 will be producing extremely high flow rates so back it down and try that. Even at a setting of 1 you will find that it is way more flow than you require (unless your loop is very restrictive).

new bubbles in a loop means you have a leak. a bay res is a ***** to bleed. find your leak if the bubbles keep coming back. air bubbles are either already in the loop and it needs bled better or they are new because its leaking.
your thermal pads are fine. worry about when you change up your loop or get new gpu and block.
fans, really? use the search feature. youve been here long enough to know better than ask a question which has been answered 1000 times.

He will need to check both scenarios I guess.

i highly doubt cavitation of a pc water pump is going to produce bubbles big enough to be what he is seeing. an easy way to find out is of course, lower the pumps speed as you suggested. if it is cavitation, slowing the speed will stop the cavitation.

why dont you get us some pictures of your loop and a parts list?

I grabbed it because it was cheap and easier for me to do back when I first did the watercooling thing.

I've ran it on speed 2 and had the same bubbles just less "whoosh" or so, I should probably run 1 or 2 though yeah. I was just experimenting to see if that would fix it.

No leaks, been running the setup for over 6 months and the water level hasn't dropped a bit.

It's like there's water stuck infront of the intake to the pump?
It appears that the water is stuck in the pump itself? The water is stuck in the impeller/black part? smile.gif

My setup is like this.



Sorry for the bad pic, but you get the idea.

Pretty sure the flow goes to the CPU first, as the CPU temps aren't awesome but that's irrelevant as my CPU clocks fairly bad

Parts List:

XSPC RX360
3x XSPC 1,250 RPM Fans
XSPC Acrylic Bayres
Koolance AR-290X GPU Block
Heatkiller CPU Rev 3.0

Order is;

Pump > Rad > CPU > GPU > Pump

Now that I'm looking the water appears to be aerated.. Hmm.

the cpu temps would be the same anyway no matter which gets coolant first.
a leak can also be a leak pulling air in. im betting thats the case. the bubbles cavitation causes is steam because the water is getting boiled.
i didnt study hydraulics or thermal dynamics or physics or anything else that would make me appear to be intelligent. i can tell you though that slowing the pump wont cause your temps to rise to a degree that hurts your loops performance and if cavitation is a real issue in your loop, it should stop it.
i hope you figure this out.

So you think it's an air leak? Hmm...

But if there was an air leak, it'd be leaking water surely? lol

I'll try a slower speed when I get some new thermal pads/change coolant as I can't do that until I rebuild the loop.. Sigh, XSPC make rubbish stuff... (Their Fans/Rads are good for the money to be fair).



Sorry, my Nexus 5 doesn't have the best camera..

It looks a lot worse then what it actually is in that photo, but yeah.

Its not that they are rubbish, the XSPC bay res have a tendency to be very sensitive to "low" liquid level, you really have to keep them topped up to the max, otherwise they "suck in" air

Okay then, well I'll walk to the supermarket once the weather here has cooled off.. It's supposedly around 22c outside.. Feels far worse then that though tongue.gif
