Need help.. HDD won't initialize?

Thread Starter
So, I'm gonna keep this as simple as I can..

Built a new PC, OS on SSD, installed a used HDD (from my mom's old pc), booted from SSD of course, found HDD under disk 1 in manager (ssd is disk 0?), wont let me initialize hdd. Says i/o error.

Ran command prompt, list disk, selected disk 1, clean, clean successful. Still can't initialize. Updated hdd driver, still nothing..

Haven't done the clean all command (only did clean) I'll try that when I get home but will that really make a difference?

Any other suggestions? Would really like to have a free 1tb of storage for movies and shows.

It's a western digital green btw. The pc it was in was built in 2010 so it's not super old or anything...

Thoughts??

Thanks all!

Edit: fixed typo

Hi there,

Yes normally Disk 0 is where your OS is installed. at least that on my case tongue.gif

Did you try to use the Disk Management on your OS? over there you can right click on the disk name and select a few options such as reactivate, convert to basic disk, or even create a new volume.

make sure the cable is good, and not loose

One more question, are you trying to start keep any data stored in the HDD?

Cheers rolleyes.gif

Cable is brand new and good..nice and tight. I mean, my system is reading that there is a disk so that's a good sign of that.

I'm in disk management from my OS.. Not sure what you mean by that. That's where it can't initialize so i cant assign it a drive letter to store stuff on.

And nope, I'm cool with completely wiping it...old OS and all. Just want another storage drive. Pretty much trying to take it back to factory settings so i can start over with it...is that even possible for an hdd that came in a factory built pc that had os installed on it?

Alright, good to know those things wink.gif

Now, yes you can wipe clean the HDD and then use it, as you are telling me the HDD was working but now is not allowing you to assing a partition.

Lets try something, try to download the HD Tune Pro with this software, you can see several things of the HDD and see if there is anything wrong with it.

We can use that software to try to wipe the HDD and with luck, be able to read again the HDD as usual rolleyes.gif

Some pics of what your problem is might help, such as the disk management.

Hi there.

If the data on the drive is not important you can try to reformat the HDD and use it in the system after that. One option is the program that @josepi suggested, but since the drive is WD you can use the manufacturer software Data Lifeguard Diagnostics to erase the content from the disk and reformat after that. Here's a link to download it:

Hope this helps mate and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Cheers! smile.gif
